The great British summer is finally here so why not enjoy a weekend at the beach.

Temperatures are set to soar in the southeast, reaching 29 degrees on Sunday, according to the Met Office.

Saturday will be slightly cooler at 27 degrees, but nonetheless it’s a weekend to enjoy the sunshine – with sun block, of course.

Beach chairs, a stick of rock and ice cream are all firm favourites for a brief escape from the busy town life.   

Here are five beaches you can drive to within three hours of Watford.

Ruislip Lido
Instead of the seaside there is a lake and while you aren’t allowed to swim in it you can enjoy the beaches surrounding the 60-acre water feature.
According to Google Maps, it only takes 25 minutes to drive there from Watford town centre.

South end on Sea

With only a one hour 45-minute drive you are spoilt for choice. This part of Essex is home to eight beaches to choose from.

The Jubilee Beach, which is close to Adventure Island and Sea-Life Adventure, was awarded the 2020 Seaside Award.

Note, that none of the beaches allow dogs, expect guide dogs, between May 1 and September 30.

Brighton

If you are a family that is split when it comes to beach holidays or city breaks, then Brighton will suit all of you.

The city is a bustling place, with pubs and vintage shops dotted around. And of course, there is the famous pier to visit. 

The beach offers water sports such as, kayaking and stand up paddle boarding.

It will take you approximately two hours and 15 minutes to drive to Brighton from Watford.

Whitstable Beach

Located in Kent, the garden of England, this beach is about two and half hours drive from Watford.

The beach is popular for windsurfing and sailing.

There is also the chance to eat at the Whitstable Oyster Company restaurant.

West Beach, Clacton on Sea

Another beach to choose from in Essex and the journey from Watford last about two hours and 18 minutes in the car.

Attractions include, Clacton Pier, The Pavilion Fun Park, bars, restaurants and town centre shopping.
