Watford has attracted its share of chart-topping bands and musicians over the years and 1963 saw some of the biggest names of that era come to town.

The Watford Observer has previously shared pictures from its archive of Cliff Richard & The Shadows on stage at the Gaumont Theatre in March 1963 and seven months later the audience at the same venue was being treated to performances from some more rock ‘n’ roll legends.

We previously looked back to the Everly Brothers’ performance at the theatre following the death of Don Everly in August 2021, but today we have dipped back into our picture archive to share images of the American duo, who topped the UK charts with hits including All I Have to Do is Dream and Cathy’s Clown, performing in town on October 5, 1963.

Only a handful of negatives from that show have survived the intervening 60 years, but the few that have include another American music great from that era, guitarist Bo Diddley.

We hope you enjoy seeing these images from our archive that have not been published for many years.
