MUSIC and lasers will create a state-of-the-art dance event in the grounds of Kendal's 15th century castle this summer in what will be "a landmark celebration of modern culture and history."

Event organisers Eclectic are putting forward a proposal to English Heritage to host a 21st century dance party inside the ramparts, which will also feature a troop of 60 to 100 drummers, a medieval singing group and a tented mini-medieval village housing food vendors selling themed food, such as spit roast, unleavened bread and meads.

If the castle's guardians approve the bid and it secures licensing, then the event will go ahead on July 13.

It will also feature a full battle re-enactment, whose participants will later man points along the castle walls protecting it from "invasion and corrosion."

A DJ performance will begin at 9.30pm "playing the latest dance beats and breaks." Eclectic further proposes having stilt walkers weaving their way through the crowds in elf, pixie and fairy costumes.

The event organisers, who are based at Kirkland above their café and delicatessen, have assured English Heritage that care will be taken to avoid pegging the areas of land that have yet to be archeologically explored.

They have also pledged to plan and co-ordinate the event in accordance with health and safety recommendations and advice from South Lakeland District Council, Cumbria police and the fire service.

They say they will employ a professional security firm to police the event and stewards to collect rubbish.

In addition, noise tests in advance of the event are proposed to keep within recommended levels while car parking is planned at Canal Head.

Eclectic has organised similar events in the past, including August 2000's `Festival in the Forest' at Kielder Castle in Northumberland, which attracted 3,000 revellers.
