Hertfordshire Philharmonia perform The Inextinguishable

BATTLING drums are to feature in the next concert by The Hertfordshire Philharmonia as it prepares to perform Carl Nielsen's Symphony No. 4, also known as The Inextinguishable, under the baton of conductor Bjorn Bantock.

One of the most dramatic in the symphonic repertoire, the piece features an electrifying and engaging battle between two sets of timpani on opposite sides of the orchestra. During this duel, the orchestra is seemingly possessed by the composer's personal motto: "Music is life, and, like life, inextinguishable."

The programme will also include Swan of Tuonela by Sibelius and Symphonic Dances for Orchestra by Edward Grieg.

The concert takes place this Saturday at 7.30pm at the St Saviour's Church, Sandpit Lane, St Albans.
