As the weekend approaches and it comes time to arrange a family outing, many parents are hoping for something to come up that will take full advantage of the weather, occupy the children with a variety of activities, and perhaps even instill an appreciation of culture for all concerned.

The Barnet Collection Garden Weekend, in aid of the NSPCC, ticks all those boxes.

Sculptures, paintings and calligraphy are all being exhibited. In addition there are jewellery stalls, a tombola, and children’s arts and crafts.

“The occasion will expand people’s knowledge of what’s going on in the local community and expand their knowledge of the NSPCC,“ says Sandra Barnett, a founding member of the group and an established potter.

“The Open Garden Weekend will be in a similar vein to the gardening exhibitions that the NSPCC put on,“ she adds, “though there will be that extra bit of art in the form of the textiles, cards and ceramics being offered for sale alongside the displays.“

The passion felt by the Barnet Collection members for weaving together the prospect of a fun day and raising money for the NSPCC is reflected in the promise of activities in silk painting and stone painting that children and adults can undertake.

The sculptors and potters have put together a fete which aims to please, and with cakes and refreshments on the agenda as well, there is something for everyone at the Open Garden Weekend’s third year.

Sandra, who is twice the winner of the London Potters Open Exhibition, explains the “symbiotic relationship” shared by the popular Garden Weekend and the NSPCC. The clay modelling and stroll in the garden are just the tip of the iceberg as locals have the chance to assist in a great cause.
