Journey from the era of spectacular silent film to the magic of modern film production and celebrate 100 years of film and television heritage in Elstree.

Since 1914, some of the world’s most iconic and groundbreaking films have been produced at Elstree Studios.

Illustrious for supporting the eccentric and revolutionary ideas of Alfred Hitchcock in the 1920s, Elstree has helped to introduce the deceptive and horrific world of the thriller, amidst the realm of fictional psychopaths and infidels.

Elstree’s aptitude for defining cinematic genres is reflected in its vast timeline of famous films, including the original Star Wars films.

In order to celebrate the innovative and exciting films produced over 100 years in the area, Hertsmere Council and Hertsmere Leisure are hosting three special outdoor cinema events in local parks, reflecting the imaginative nature of the outstanding films produced in Elstree and Borehamwood.

Follow the psychological complexity of King George VI’s ascension to the throne, embattled with poignant fear, in The King’s Speech at King George Recreation Ground, Bushey.

Join Indiana Jones in a desperate mission to find a mystical stone, stumbling upon an evil, blood-thirsty secret cult in the action-packed Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom at Meadow Park, Borehamwood.

Go on an adventure with Sherlock Holmes, and his assistant Dr John Watson, as they quest to defeat a dark and mysterious adversary in Sherlock Holmes and the Game of Shadows at Oakmere Park, Potters Bar.

“What better way to celebrate this wonderful centenary than enjoying some of the great films that have been made in the area,“ says councillor Brenda Battan, portfolio holder for leisure, culture and health.

“I hope that many local residents will come along to enjoy these evenings and, hopefully, the weather will be kind.“ All films start at 7pm and light refreshments will be provided. Bring along a picnic, a blanket, and a fold-up chair and prepare to escape from reality and enter into fictional worlds in unique and beautiful settings.
