Letting your feet do the talking
Celebrity foot reader Jane Sheehan can help reveal people's emotions through their feet
Celebrity foot reader Jane Sheehan can help reveal people's emotions through their feet

CELEBRITY foot reader Jane Sheehan has described me as an over-tired, optimistic, natural leader in need of a holiday - I like her immediately.

Any excuse for a break is welcomed, but it's not just this opening gambit that gets my attention during my 20 minute reading. According to Jane I am also dividing my emotions and trying to protect myself from too much responsibility - and all this from just my toes?

Buckingham-based Jane, 42, has been revealing people's emotions through their feet for seven years, a job which has taken her around the world and onto TV.

But this week she was faced with my hardened heels in the rather unglamorous setting of the Bucks Free Press offices.

Straight away she tells me my extremely pale feet are a sign I'm tired. Jane then moves onto my toes and analyses each individually explaining what the curves, shape and size mean.

After examining the underside of my size fives she exclaims: "One subject is taboo with you. That's your own fears. You'll talk about anything else except your own fears, you try and keep those close."

Interesting. But perhaps more intriguing is how Jane got into her unusual line of work. After visiting a reflexologist she says she was "fascinated" by how much she was told about herself through her feet.

Following this she was inspired to become a reflexologist, and she still practices, but as she saw more clients she began to make more emotional connections between the feet and the person.

"Before I did this job I always used to get bored. Now I love getting out of bed."

"I love it," she says. "Before I did this I did so many other jobs and I always used to get bored and now I love getting out of bed. You never know what the day's going to bring. For me it's the difference between going through life sleep walking and going through life living every minute."

Jane's career has proved so successful she is in high demand for foot reading parties, teaching seminars and one-to-one sessions.

It has also allowed her to write a book. Let's Read Our Feet was published in 2005 and is a step-by-step guide for anyone wanting to dip their toes into the world of foot reading. Jane's client list includes the cast of Loose Women, Celebrity Fat Club and some Middle East royalty from Dubai.

"It's a really incredible way of connecting with people," she says. "I've just been to Australia and a Jewish singles club got hold of me. I got them reading each others feet as an ice breaker."

So what else does Jane have to say about mine? Was I going to meet a tall, dark, handsome stranger? The short answer was no. "I can tell the past and the present, but I don't read the future," she says.

Jane's reading was an insightful eye opener and despite not knowing what the future held for me, I think a holiday is definitely on the cards.

Jane is coming to High Wycombe to hold a foot reading theory seminar, which is being held on Monday, November 26. The course costs £65. For more information telephone Maria on 01494 711741.
