Sculptor Caroline Russell (pictured below), from Stanmore, was delighted to be offered an exhibition at the Radlett Centre, but there was just one thing — it all had to be wall-mounted.

“Having worked as a sculptor for 20 years, it was a real challenged to mount an exhibition that could be hung on the walls,” says Caroline who, undaunted, created a series of ‘sculptural paintings’ and named the exhibition New Directions.

These striking works are mixed media on canvas and occupy a unique space between two-dimensional and three-dimensional art. The acid-free drypoint etchings were all individually hand-printed by Caroline in her garden studio.

The paintings start out as drawings which are cut out of mountboard, sometimes in many layers, and then stuck on canvas. Caroline often adds plaster or other materials before painting these constructions, often using metallic paint to convey the effect of casting in metal.

“The exhibition is called New Dimensions because these sculptural paintings are almost two-and-a-half dimensional, which feels like a new dimension,“ says Caroline.

l New Dimensions is at the Radlett Centre, Aldenham Avenue, Radlett, from Monday, December 1 to Wednesday, December 31, Monday to Saturday from 10am to 4pm, and on Sundays from 12.30pm to 4pm. You can meet the artist on Tuesdays and Sundays from 2pm to 3pm. Details: ussellsculptures.com
