Recurring patterns and guessing games mark the work currently on show at Watford Grammar School for Girls’ Visual Arts Centre.

For the show, Watford photographer Nicole Gomes presents Past And Present, a visual summary of photographic work from A Level to university, alongside Guess The Artists, a selection of artwork by the school art department.

Georgina Wheeler, Head of Art at Watford Girls says: “I hoped that the audience would find enjoyment in trying to match up their experience and perception of the individual teachers to the artistic quality and traits in each artwork. It also seemed a nice idea to turn the tables, and for once be scrutinised and evaluated by the pupils.

"Nicole’s photography, showing a pictorial progression from A level to Degree level, is of interest to me as her teacher, because I can see subtle changes in the drama and stylisation in her work since leaving school and equally it summarises a strong natural technique and some really interesting ideas.”

Nicole is now studying at BA Photography at University College Falmouth and says her years at Watford Grammar helped her strengthen the concepts behind her work.

“I wanted to include both past and present work as it shows the beginning of my love for photography and where my journey is now taking me.

At Watford Grammar, I was working under the titles of Art Meets Photography and Passions & Obsessions, in which I mainly explored self-image. Looking back now, I feel that I have strongly benefited from learning photography in the context of art."

The exhibitions run until February 16 at Visual Arts Centre, Watford Grammar School for Girls, Ladys Close, Watford open Monday and Wednesday 4pm to 8pm.
