Identity is at the heart of Ourselves and Others, the latest project by Disability Recreation Unity Movement (DRUM). During the process, DRUM members found the opportunity to express their own experiences as well as expanding their individual talents.
Ceramics volunteer Juliette Purdy was particularly impressed with the results.
“I am especially pleased how they were prepared to face up to the challenge of making work that focused on an aspect of their disability,” says Juliette. “For some this was how they felt about a hand, foot or perhaps their speech – some part of themselves that no longer performs as it used to. The resulting pieces of work are lively, quirky and dynamic each with its own unique individuality and style."
At DRUM activities include stimulating pursuits such as yoga and fishing, as well as art, textiles, ceramics and creative writing.
DRUM members have created some fine examples of ceramic heads and a highly poignant damaged hand by Claire Lovelock. Some members have also put their thoughts on paper.
Art tutor Kathryn Foster adds: “We’ve got some very descriptive poetry as well as self-portraits in painting, collage and ceramics that tell of their feelings about their lives, their past and the people around them. Some are funny, some sad, but all tell a very personal story.”
