Alexander Flood is a man with many strings to his bow – or maybe that should be many pipes to his organ – as a composer, conductor, teacher and organist, pianist and harpsichord player. And now he is adding another job to his musical CV as the new musical director of Radlett Choral Society – just in time for its 60th anniversary.
He is perhaps best known locally as the organist at St Peter’s Church in St Albans, a position he has held for more than ten years, he also directs the Sandringham School Community Choir in St Albans and teaches piano and organ at Wycombe Abbey School in Buckinghamshire as well as to many private students in St Albans.
Eagle-eyed choral music fans may also remember seeing him when he was Radlett Choral’s assistant conductor about five years ago or, if your memory is really good, when he was organ scholar at St Albans Cathedral from 2000 to 2001, while he was studying composition at Oxford.
Alex was very pleased to find Radlett Choral Society in such good form when he took over as musical director last month.
“They’re singing very well at the moment,“ he says, “we’ve had wonderful rehearsals so far and they’re in very, very good voice.
“I’m very happy to be working with them and leading them onwards in this special season for them.“
The choir is working so well that Alex has no plans to change the way they work, but has a number of very special concerts planned to celebrate their 60th season, including a Christmas concert and the official anniversary concert next spring, when the group will perform some wonderful celebratory music by Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven – “it’s going to be fabulous,“ Alex, who lives in Amersham, promises.
“The choir seems to be very much on an upward trajectory,“ he continues, “and we’re looking forward to keeping that going.
“We’d really like to increase the numbers. We’re a healthy size at the moment, but it would be wonderful to have a few more people come along and enjoy this experience with us.“
