It's teenagers turn to party outside in the sunshine this Saturday when Summer Sounds returns to St Albans.

The free, one-day festival is organised by young people, for young people aged 13 to 19, with anyone over the age limit only allowed in if they have a young person with them, and will showcase promising musicians from the area.

The event is provided by St Albans District Council and managed by St Albans Arts Team, in collaboration with Youth Connexions and the line-up has been hand-picked by a panel of young people.

It features an eclectic mix of acts ranging from the indie and punk-pop stylings of acts like Blue Tongued Skinks, Eutony, Bright Conclusions, The Neverists and Trash Boat through to new acoustic and folky singer-songwriters like LivziEm, Aja, Ije Amaechi, Oliver Bannister and India Mason-Mills.

Also taking to the stage will be up-and-coming duo Franklin, who have just released EP Colours, will soon release single Lullaby with Armada Records and who will feature on BBC Introducing on Three Counties Radio on August 30.

We caught up with them to find out more.

Who are you and what do you do?

Brandon Hargrave, 20, lead guitar/backing vocals, I work in the Jack Wills Store in St Albans. Alex Frankl, 16, lead vocal/rhythm guitar, Alex is at school 6th form taking A Levels

How did y’all meet?

We met at a local gig. Brandon invited Alex to come and play at a gig which further lead to us having a jam writing our first single in our first practice. This released December 2012. (Hold Me)

What’s with the name?

Brandon's dad always used to ask him when he was going to be practising with Franklin, thinking Alex's name was Alex Franklin. When we recorded out first EP we needed to come up with a band name, this fitted pretty nicely :)

What do you sound like?

With our sound we are really trying to be something different! This is the only way you will get any notice in the music industry. We would class our music as singer songwriter/alternative acoustic. its very edgy acoustic music with very punchy riffs/melodic breakdowns. If we had to say who do we sound like I would say a cross between, Ed Sheeran, Foals and Saint Raymond.

What can people expect from your gig at Summer Sounds?

We love to entertain and get the crowd pumping to our upbeat tracks! We will be ending on our new single Ghost Also the title of our album out later this year! This will be the first time playing it live.

Who has influenced your music?

Brandon's Granddad was the one who gave him his first guitar at 10, which by the time Brandon was 14 he had already started song writing. We like to travel and write music on things we have experienced.

Is it easier to pick up dates when you‘re in a band?

In some ways yes I would say it is, chicks dig guys in bands as long as they are not big headed aha.

Best gig/moment to date?

Boardmasters Festival summer 2013 has been by far our favourite gig to play! Nice big outside stage ,3,000 people at our stage, sun and surf!

How does it feel to be playing Scala?

I must have just smiled for a good 10 minutes. We are still so so excited to be playing the on August 9! Lots of practice is going in to make sure we are as tight as we can be knowing Bombay Bicycle Club will be there! It feels great to finally know all the hard work is paying off.

How far along are you with the new album?

We are in the process of recording the album, only two songs left to write! We aim for this to be out December 2014.

Which was the hardest to write and why?

Lullaby was one of the hardest songs to write, it was written at a pretty low time for us when things were not working out and we were not getting where we wanted.

Best looking member of the band?

That's for the public to decide aha! Lets just say we never have never had any issues with women.
