Produced by Faithless mainstay Rollo in cahoots with Gorillaz collaborators Passion Pictures, One Eskimo’s first outing is back by a series of animations that capture the music’s purity of sound and vision.
The clutch of cleanly constructed pop songs written by some-time chart botherer Kristian Leonitou recount the story of an eskimo and his band of a giraffe, monkey and penguin. Stand out track is the lead single Kandi, which bends a Candi Staton sample (He Called Me Baby) into its immaculately realised still small voice of calm. At its best it’s undoubtedly lovely, but there are times the whole effect suffers from sounding a little too distant – too cool when it could do with turning up the heat.
Still, for the first morning after the weekend before, this should do a job.
