After gifting us the perfect Christmas anthem in We’re All Going To Die, everyone’s favourite former member of Arab Strap has gone back to doing what he does best – namely writing tart little songs with great choruses and a peculiar strain of quite charming misery.
Roping in old pals King Creosote and fellow ex-Strapper Jenny Reeve, Middleton croons, shouts, spits and raps his way through 10 songs ranging from the boisterous stomp of Red Travellin’ Socks to Don’t Want To Sleep Tonight’s long dark day of the soul folk. Malcolm never sounds exactly happy, but there’s something in his glumness that lets you know he’s OK really as he shakes up the previous rootsy acoustic strums and chiming big sky anthems with some piano, a little dub bass and some dancey interludes.
