When I turned up to see the exuberant Australian comedian, Adam Hills, I was told to expect the unexpected. But what I wasn't prepared for was the fact that he stripped naked at the end - whilst singing may I add. It was all for a good cause and very entertaining and I guess it was a good way to end a great show.

The show titled Clown Hearts, which had packed out the Colosseum, was literally hilarious from start to finish. The best thing was a good two-thirds seemed to be spontaneous stand-up. Often it was as though he was simply having a chat with the entire audience, which made it seem as though you were part of his show.

One of the highlights has to be the formation of his new, yet old, boyband - there were endless names suggested as to what this group should be called, from The Backstrain Boys to New Hips on the Block. But the best bit was it featured Hertfordshire County Council's cabinet member for highways, Councillor Terry Douris - the man responsible for patching up pot holes and implementing the experimental one-way scheme in Watford, which caused traffic mayhem. The jokes that churned out from Adam as soon as he found out what he does were priceless. Then of course, he had them dance on the stage and that just topped it off.

The 45-year-old also attempted to set Terry up on a date with a random woman in the audience - not sure how that will play out but they got a free bottle of prosecco out of it.

In wasn't until the second half that we heard his actual material that he had prepared for Clown Hearts. Scripted it may be, but again, the way he delivered it was very much like he was having a conversation with us, except there was a comic punchline every two or so minutes. The father-of-two talked a lot about his family and recent experiences and despite some of it being deep and sensitive, like dealing with death and explaining it to children, he somehow made it light and funny.

Some of his material on his prosthetic leg I have heard before in his previous shows. Humorous as it was, there were many people in the audience who had also seen his shows before so it would have been nice to hear some new, perhaps another joke or story about his leg other than the time he went through Heathrow Airport security shortly after 9/11.

We also saw a soft side of the Sydney-born comic. We saw a video and spoke to a man, who is battling cancer and has become an inspiration to Adam. The pair met at a show and Adam joined in his Naked Tuesday fundraiser. Now as a ritual at the end of each show, Adam video calls this guy back in Australia and they sing and strip together. At the very end, Adam holds a collection bucket a raises money for a charity the venue has chosen. On Monday they raised money for Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Overall, Adam Hills is an ingenious comic who knows how to make a crowd laugh till their stomachs hurt, and it is so refreshing to see a genuine guy simply making people happy.
