The Giggle Inn Comedy Club has been running for just five months but it has already cemented its spot as the place to be in Watford on the first Sunday of every month.

After attending the curtain-raiser in October, I have yet to miss a show and I’m still waiting for the night when I come away disappointed.

Garston comic Phil Butler has consistently provided shows containing some of the leading comedians in the country to an intimate audience of around 100 at the Pump House Theatre in Watford.

Last Sunday was no different with a night full of variety and four more impressive acts.

Phil no longer comperes the evenings as he presents the Green Room podcasts from the show, which are uploaded to iTunes the following day. So on this occasion it was the likable Nick Page, who will be known by many from his time as presenter of Escape to the Country.

The two leading performers from the night typified the variety Giggle Inn provides. In truth, the opening act Steve Best's comedy was not quite 'my type', his wacky style and face-pulling left me a little confused at times. But it was a grower and with the help of his numerous props, provided an energetic set which made sure your eyes were glued to the stage throughout.

The two middle spots were filled by experienced comic Herbie Adams and newcomer Gordon Smith, whose original ‘Gag Minute’ idea was delivered excellently.

But the highlight was most certainly headliner Ian Stone. Having a Jewish background enabled Stone to touch on subjects often left alone by other comics to great effect and when he noticed a few in the audience were a little unsure whether to laugh or not, he adapted well to bring them along.

Stone’s interaction with the crowd was second-to-none and he is an intelligent comedian who leaves you wanting much more. The same could be said for the Giggle Inn and April’s show including Tim Clark, Benjamin Crellin and Curtis Walker, is likely to be another must-see.

The Giggle Inn's Phil Butler is currently mentoring BBC Three Counties Radio’s Lorna Milton as she attempts to become a comedian for the night to raise money for Comic Relief.
