A satirical dig at tabloid media written by award-winning playwright Lucy Kirkwood will be performed in St Albans next week in aid of Watford Mencap Children’s Centre.
NSFW (Not Safe For Work)is set in the corrupt and opportunistic offices of lads’ mag Doghouse, which has just chosen the winner of its annual Local Lovely competition.
It is a world where overqualified graduates fight for a foot in the door of the creative arts, and settle for whatever job will pay the bills. The play questions: do monsters make the media? Does the media make us monsters? And how do we try to hold on to love when all our values have eroded?
It is being brought to the Abbey Theatre by CLICK Arts, run by Audrey Tang, a former teacher at The Marlborough Science Academy in St Albans, who also stars in the show.
The cast is made up of local teachers and other professionals Audrey met while at Marlborough, including Brian Sweeny who teaches at the academy, David Sanderson of St Albans School, Alex Coles of London Colney Primary School and Andrew Whalley from Watford Grammar School for Girls.
Abbey Theatre, Westminster Lodge, Holywell Hill, St Albans, October 22 to 25, 7.30pm. Details: 01727 857861, abbeytheatre.org.uk
