The women behind great men

12:38pm Friday 19th June 2009

A PLAY based on the work of the new Poet Laureate, Carol Ann Duffy, takes place at St Albans’ Maltings Arts Theatre on Wednesday 24 June.

This Edinburgh Festival 2009 preview of The World’s Wife is a stage version of Duffy’s acclaimed poems, performed by actor/director Linda Marlowe, who has enjoyed widespread acclaim for previous work such as Berkoff’s Women.

Renowned for giving voice to remarkable women, she has performed in the West End, on tour and internationally, while enjoying many roles on stage and screen and directing award winning work. In this new show, her penetrating insight is combined with Duffy’s dark humour and acerbic wit.

The World’s Wife imagines the perspectives of the wives of famous men through the ages, while casting an astute glance over the modern world. The verse cuts through boundaries between factual and fictional women to get under the skin of the women “behind” great men, from Mrs Faust and Frau Freud to Queen Kong and Mrs Midas.

Carol Ann Duffy is a multi-award winning poet, playwright, freelance writer and, of course, the new Poet Laureate. She is one of Britain’s most loved and successful contemporary writers.

The World’s Wife gives audiences the chance to see her poetry brought to life, and it is the perfect show for fans of her work, those studying her poetry, and people who have yet to discover the worlds contained within her poems.

The World's Wife is at Maltings Arts Theatre, St Albans, on Wednesday, June 24 at 8pm. Tickets: 01727 844222 (£12 / £10 conc.). Not suitable for Under 14s.
