A warm Thursday evening saw Palace Theatre staff and their guests gathered together in anticipation of the venue’s exciting new season, which commences in September and culminates with Watford’s much-loved family pantomime, the loveable rags to riches tale Cinderella, in December.
Artistic Director Brigid Larmour will direct one of the highlights of the theatre’s autumn season, a major revival of the much loved play My Mother Said I Never Should which was premiered by Brigid in Manchester 22 years ago. Since 1987 it has rightly found a place on many academic syllabuses.
Talking about the play Brigid says: "Charlotte has written a brilliant and poignant play about the complex and often hidden relationships between mothers and daughters. It explores the lives, loves, and choices of mothers through four generations of women in the same family." My Mother Said I Never Should is staged at the Palace from September 24 to October 17.
The programme also includes work from two of the Palace’s Creative Associate Companies, SCAMP and East London based new writing company, nabokov. Scamp, launch their national tour of Stick Man based on the book by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler, at the Palace in early September.
nabokov present Is Everyone Okay? by Fringe First winning playwright Joel Horwood. This brand new theatrical experience is billed as being ‘for anyone who has ever hit 30 and asked themselves what they’re doing with their life.’
Spike Milligan’s celebrated war memoirs have been inventively adapted for the stage in Adolf Hitler: My Part in His Downfall by Ben Power and Tim Carroll, which plays at the Palace from November 2 to 7. The Palace Entertainers programme once again offers something for those looking for a little light entertainment. Denis Norden is in conversation with Samantha Norman on September 10 and then two well known young comedians take to the Watford stage – Marcus Brigstocke on September 16 and Russell Kane on October 23.
As always, the Palace opens its doors to local groups to perform, including PlatformONE a showcase of professional and local dance theatre groups performing Urban and hip hop dance, and Cassio Operatic Society’s production of The Music Man
The Palace-run Hertfordshire County Youth Theatre present Grimm Tales, adapted by 2009’s UK poet Laureate Carol Anne Duffy, on October 30 and 31.
There will also be a number of writing and drama workshops for adults and more pre and post-show discussions.
Free copies of the Theatre’s Autumn season brochure can be obtained from the Theatre Box Office, telephone 01923 225671. Booking is now open for Cinderella. www.watfordpalacetheatre.co.uk
