Shakespeare’s Globe is the dream venue for many a young acting talent and for Croxley Green actress Emily Jane Kerr, that dream is about to come true when she takes to the stage at the fifth annual Sam Wanamaker Festival on Sunday, March 21.
The 21-year-old who is currently in her third year at Central School of Speech and Drama will perform alongside other students from 22 of the UK’s leading drama schools.
“When I was younger, my mum took me on a tour of the Globe,” recalls Emily. “It had just reopened and I was desperate to be allowed up on the stage but they wouldn’t let me, so this is my dream coming true for one day.”
Emily, who attended Watford Grammar School for Girls, spent the past ten years with Blag Youth Theatre, most recently performing in the Christmas special at The Pump House and Rip ‘Em Off! at the Arts Theatre in Leicester Square. She also performed in Summer Holiday with The Rickmansworth Players.
To audition for the fesitval at the Globe, Emily selected a scene from As You Like It.
“The feedback from my tutor was that I understood every single word I was saying in Shakespeare’s text. It is complicated and passionate but I was really just enjoying myself.”
While at the festival, Emily will also take part in a weekend of classes, lectures and workshops at the Globe, exploring language, movement and voice with the theatre’s practitioners. The festival culminates in the public performance of plays by Shakespeare and his contemporaries, including Webster, Dekker, Ford, Middleton and Fletcher. For the festival Emily will perform a scene from John Fletcher’s Jacobean comedy The Wild Goose Chase.
