Snakes
Hazily, i gazed at the shadow puppets on the wall that tried to converse with me in mime.
Jumping, hopping, pouncing, to and fro, their dusty silhouettes were rejoicing their freedom. The moon beamed down, giving its blessings as the wing ruffled the leaves on the window sill as if to say, well done. I slowly reached over to close the window; carefully, cautiously, as quiet as a mouse. Taking one last glance, not knowing when my next one would be, I watched the reflection of my deep green eyes glistening in the moonlight. I heard the rhythm of footsteps shuffling up the stairs, one, two, one, two, one, two. My mind was prepared for anything.
Like a soldier, I stood at attention, I was holding my breath... The fear sucked the colour out of my face making me as white as chalk. The footsteps continued getting louder and louder. I covered my ears trying mask, capture or seal the silence in my mind. \'Please\' i whispered. It never worked but i still kept hoping that one day it would. Slowly the door crept open and a soft breeze floated into the room. He craned his neck round the door and he glared at me, eyes as sharp as darts. His forked tongue licked his fixed lips which never seemed to move out of place. His eyes were what seemed to scare me the most; that piercing stare which never showed any emotion. His scaly cracked olive skin was neglected and was not pleasant to look at. His slow, awkward steps looked like an imaginary game of twister. Like a statue I froze. Not like the beautiful ones of Greek goddesses all poised and elegant. I felt more like a chalky grey gargoyle left to rot in acid rain it seemed he had taken a life time just to walk to the other side of the room where I froze crouched, but it wasn't.
Three minutes and thirty-four seconds counting to be exact.35, 36, 37... He stood over me and smiled tentatively. It was like he wasn't even sure why he was smiling. I pray the ground will swallow me whole that a teleports of freedom would open. He grabbed my arm so tightly, my baggy t-shirt clung to me with fear, he made me feel used. I was only there to be taken advantage of.
He crouched down next to me and keeping eye contact at all times. Like a snake charmer. My eyes stare back fixed. There were hypnotised... mesmerised by his evil glow. He whispered sour nothings in my ear, saying my name. It was all gibberish to me. I hated my name. Kay. It wasn't special, in fact it reminded me of snakes. The charmer playing a tune in my ear and I can\'t help but follow the rhythm. A tear trickled down my face. My innocence and happiness was stolen... I had to get out. He slinked out of the door like a sly fox. I tried to slither out of the window as quietly as I could. The moon lit a path and showered more blessings and protection for my concluding journey. The crumpled leaves on my window sill trailed behind me for security.
I wondered through the deserted road, pitch black; walking over the bridge slowly appreciating every breath of fresh air clearing my lungs. It was still, as quite as death. I stared out the water, trickling over rocks in the rejuvenating river below. I sat on the stony bridge dangling my stick thin legs over the edge; taking one last sigh.
Hazily, I gazed at the shadow puppets around me. Jumping, hopping, and floating in the water with me their dusty silhouettes rejoicing my freedom.
