Personal Overview - Was elected for the first time to the safe seat of Orpington for the Conservatives at the 2010 General Election. The second member of the Johnson family to enter the House of Commons, his older brother is former MP and London Mayor Boris Johnson and father former MEP Stanley Johnson. Has considerable journalistic experience, spending 12 years at the Financial Times where as well as rising to the rank of Associate Editor he also was the editor of its influential Lex Column (a daily business and financial column). He also has experience of the media, appearing on both the television and radio, particularly covering business and financial issues. He was appointed to be the head of David Cameron's Policy Unit in April 2013, heading up a team of Special Advisors and senior Civil Servants at 10 Downing Street. Some observers likened the structure of the Policy Unit to the political setup at the time of Margaret Thatcher's premiership.
