Mobile phone giant T-Mobile is to appeal against a decision to refuse planning permission for an eight metre high mast in Mill End.

The company wants to erect the mast, disguised as telegraph pole, on a grass verge adjacent to 71 and 73 Berry Lane but had its plans rebuffed at an April meeting of Three Rivers District Council's Development Control Committee.

Councillors ruled the structure would, by virtue of its height, form an incongruous and obtrusive feature at odds with its largely rural surroundings. They also objected to its proximity to local houses and nearby Arnett Hills Hills Primary School.

T-Mobile, however, intends to force through construction with an appeal to the Secretary of State for the Environment.

Many residents, however, are furious at the appeal and are urging neighbours to make their feelings known to the government inspector who will decide the case.

Lillian Erdel-Jan, of Arnett Way, who has formed and action group to fight the application, said: "We have delivered more than 500 leaflets to let people know what they should do next.

"This mast is too close to our houses and far too close to the school down the road. If we do not make our feelings on this clear then it will be built against our wishes."
