A Polish woman walking home in Chiswick late at night was dragged off the street and viciously raped by a strange man because "she did not treat him respectfully," a court heard today.

No fewer than seven people living in flats near Kew Bridge heard the midnight screams of the 34 year-old woman being dragged into the basement area and raped - but none called the police.

But a woman passenger in a passing car did hear and see a woman being dragged from the pavement.

She dialled 999 and got her driver to turn the car in the North Circular returning to the cene to help police.

"She saw a man and woman emerging from the side of a building and nearby was a silver Audi with two Asian men in it. They said they were waiting for him, pointing at the man on the pavement" prosecutor Tim Devlin told Isleworth Crown Court.

He ran off chased by police on foot who lost him. But other officers later found him in the back of the Audi, being driven through Petersham, and "very out of breath", said counsel.

He turned out to be Kingston undergraduate Imran Rathore, 21, who lives with three brothers and a sister in Trinity Hall Close, Watford.

Today he finally pleaded guilty to two charges of rape - oral and vaginal - on a 34-year-old Polish woman unknown to him, on the night of August 27 last year, and was jailed for eight years.

Ordering him to sign on the sex offenders' register for life, Judge Sam Katkhuda told him: "Women should expect to be able to walk along the street minding their own business without being attacked by people like you - subjected to this sort of disgraceful behaviour.

"This was somebody not known to you whatsoever and when she didn't want to have anything to do with you, you attacked her, taking all her dignity away from her, subjecting her to things she didn't want to do. You just carried on," he said.

"This was a very serious attack on a total stranger."
