McAnuff: I fancy a penalty
Jobi McAnuff says he would be willing to replace Darius Henderson as Watford's penalty taker.
Aidy Boothroyd refused to confirm this week whether his leading scorer would be relieved of the duties after missing two successive spot-kicks - "either Hendo will take it or someone else will" - but a decision is likely to be made before the players leave for Plymouth today (Friday).
"I quite fancy one," said the confident McAnuff, who is yet to take a spot-kick in a competitive game. "We haven't sorted it out yet but there are a few of the boys who would fancy it.
"Tommy would be up for it, Lee Williamson went to get the ball on Saturday and he's taken them before in games. It's a big thing because it can really make a difference. There is no point nominating someone who doesn't want to take one."

I've personally never liked a left footer taking penalties...especial
ly ones that approach the ball straight on, too easy to read, gotta put your foot through the ball and smash it centrally high or watch the keeper and adjust accordingly but that's an art in itself!
Come on sage.....tells us how it's done.

My vote would go for Tommy Smith who has taken them before.

I was talking in general terms, what would you say is the best way to take a penalty apart from hit and hope?

Only place to put penalties are right in the top corners. Does not matter whether a left footer or right footer takes the penalty. Professional player should not miss the target or give the keeper any chance from 12 yards.

I used to be a penalty taker, and I am left footed. I used to lean to my right and place the ball to my left, usually top corner/ top third of the goal. I scored 14 one season, three the next, with no misses (though fortunately one was saved but the ref said the keeper moved so I re-took that one and scored). I joined another team the following season and took one...blazed it over the bar! Never took one again but used to love taking them. I remember Luther Blissett years ago, he would stand with his back to the goal, keep the goalie guessing, then just turn around and hammer it. That also seemed to work. If any penalty is placed well enough and with enough pace then no goal keeper should be able to save it, but it is always easier said than done. If Tommy has taken them before then give him a shot - on the basis that we get another penalty this regular season.

Drinker, only reduces accuracy if you blast it. A well placed penalty high into corners will always beat the keeper. As we have seen in the last few weeks, low is easier to stop if the keeper goes the right way and down the centre is silly if the keeper does not move.

Andy I do not agree-basic physics mate!
You can place or hit a low shot without getting air under it-once you raise it control and therefore accuracy reduces.
I was a local league goalie for a while and as I was not great at crosses I had to be a shop stopper & did not do badly v penalties. much easier to reach up than down and many times I got across to them but could not get down to them and they went under my hand.
Also, factually most keepers being right handed are stronger on that side and most kickers being right footed will put it to keepers right rather than open their body up to hit it across the keeper on his weaker side.
Darius used to (unusually for a left footer) hit it low to keepers right. At Bristol he went to keepers left but made it shoulder high-keepers favorite against Stoke he went back to his usual side but still raised it off ground with little power.
A firm side footer into bottom corner is virtually impossible to save.
Sorry about the length of this mate.

I find it amazing that this site allows someone to post in another persons name and for those who do.....Get a life and do the decent thing!!
I for one is missing old sage, in a strange way, he was a constant source of amusement to me and on my part was a friendly banter between us supporters until imposters intervened, anyway...
This goalscoring thing is becoming critical now that DH is banned for a couple of games, where on earth are our goals gonna come from?
Aidy has to get someone in, what about Earnshaw? there's only 5 days to go. Good result today as it has been in previous weeks against the teams around us, we've got to start winning against the lesser teams now, so next week against Hull I wouldn't mind another draw, but we're not going to get there by limping along with single points week in week out.
Personally i don't think we're going to do it! I do hope i'm wrong.
