Liberal Democrats win by-election

Stephen Giles-Medhurst has defeated Labour candidate, Colin Gray at the polls tonight (Thursday).

The Liberal Democrat county and Three Rivers District councillor has won the Leavesden seat in Abbots Langley Parish Council with 865 votes, after a by-election today.

Labour received 79 votes.

The election was called to replace Liberal Democrat councillor, Betty O'Neill, who died in December last year.

Firstly many thanks to all who voted in he by-election in Easter week- there were clearly many people away but a poll of 24% was quite good. Of course a special thank you to the overwhemling number, some 92% of those that voted, who decided to back myself for the Parish council. I hope to use my local knowledge and experience to good effect.

Like many people I was suprised that the Conservatives, who claim that Watford is a three way race, and who came a clear second to me in the May local elections could not be bothered to stand a candidate. They clearly accounted for some people not voting and the 13 spolit and blank papers handed in.

It's an houour to have such support and I will continune to work hard for all residents I represent.

Igloo, does anyone in Watford care what happens on a council estate in Stevenage?

He must be having a laugh. The only thing Medhurst works hard at is self promotion.

So basically, despite "Steven's" up-beat spin on the situation, only 22% of the electorate could be bothered to turn out and vote for him - hardly a resounding endorsement by any measure.

I'm begining to think that he's definitely only in it for the money - as well as his full time job as a senior customs officer he's both a county and ward councillor - must have a pretty c***p home life. How can he find the time to do his day job properly with all the "hard work" he's doing for 22% of residents he represents? No wonder we've got so much illegal bush meat coming into the country.

22% is a higher share of the electorate that Claire Ward received at a well-publicised General Election.

And unlike megabucks MPs, needing a second home to save them from a short commute and bump up their pensions, Parish Councillors don't get paid.

Can one of you budding (or actual)politicians tell me why the Conservatives didn't stand?

Did they forget to put up a candidate?

Andy, either they forgot, or they simply couldn't be bothered.

Either way, it doesn't look good for a party that claims to be contenders here in Watford.

Well I like Stephen, he's listened and helped a lot with the notoriously difficult area that is called Eastbury Road, he's on our side more than most.
Congratulations mate and yes keep up your hard work.

Yes - he replied to my email complaint about blocked drains and pavement floods in Oxhey Avenue, and the botched traffic calming. Nothing happened of course, but its not his fault the County Council simply log problems rather than sort them out. But at least I can go on the County website and see my complaints recorded if not resolved
