Why should they be?

Because they have wasted their votes on an ignorant Nazi - I would have thought that was obvious to anyone with half a brain?

I am appalled that residents of South Oxhey have seen fit to turn their back on Labour candidate Nina Spellan who has served the community tirelessly for many, many years and elect a BNP candidate. I can only hope that Three Rivers councillors of Labour, LibDem and Tory persuasion refuse to work with a representative of a party that promotes bigotry, racism and community disharmony.

To quote my mum when I told her ''I knew there are lots of stupid people in south oxhey..but I didnt think there was that many'' LibDems traditionally do quite well here, I wonder how much their candidate pulling out at the last minute had to do with BNP getting all these extra votes?

282 voted for BNP and 552 voted against. Shows the inadequacy of our voting system. Not really a true reflection for the residents of South Oxhey.

OK; I'm apalled at this result. But what does it actually mean?? What innfluence, what powers and what decisions can this BNP candidate exercise over South Oxhey? Does anyone actually know? What does gaining this seat really MEAN? They're not going to stop a single Pole or Lithuanian from living in South Oxhey are they? They're not going to make black people leave South Oxhey are they? And thank god. Because this area will thrive and prosper, and delight in the great mix of people, and their characters and values, just like we always have here. Despite what people from surrounding areas may perceive; onevof South Oxhey's great strengths has been that it's people recognise goodness, decency and directness in all people, from all background, whether Black, Indian, Irish or European. That's my experience since 1970 living here, and LONG MAY THAT CONTINUE.

These responses are just nasty. Calling the people of South Oxhey ignorant and shameful for voting for a party you disagree with? They have every right to make their demands heard. Perhaps if the other parties tending to the needs of native Brits better there would be no need for a BNP vote, but people still have the right to vote for any legal party they chose to.
Besides, who resembles the Nazi's more: pro-immigration groups who would bring about the eventual extinction of Indigenous Brits or the BNP who simply want to stop further immigration and preserve their heritage.

This is called giving the main parties a kick in the minimals!!
People are fed up of the utter arrogance of the "big three" parties. All the leaflets I recieved concerning the election from these parties just focused on how bad the others were and what they had done wrong. Nothing positive comes from them. We live in a DEMOCRACY.If people want to vote BNP they can, doesn't mean they are morons, just because you dont agree with their point of view.
If that was the case then London must be full of morons who voted in Boris Johnson!!!!
Here is to four years of fun and ****-ups in our capital. I bet Gordon Brown is secretly happy

As Winston Churchill once siad 'Democracy is the worst form of government except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.'
Problem is it's a blunt instrument. Voters in London may have wanted to punish Gordon Brown or didn't like Ken's paternity record or disliked the congestion charge or bendy buses but whatever the individual reasons the result is the same - victory for Boris which many may come to regret.
Similarly there will be many reasons why individuals voted for the BNP and some have been mentioned already but the result is the same.
The BNP do listen to the local community and then appeal to people's fears and ignorance but they don't serve the community well by doing so. The only way to stop their rise is to challenge and confront them and expose their true nature. That's a job not just for the other parties but for everyone.

Certainly the Liberal Democrat candidate withdrawing in Ashridge was most odd. It is a pity the Watford Observer as the local newspaper didn't see fit to investigate this extremely unusual and therefore newsworthy event. It certainly affected the outcome in that ward. After all he's stood for election before and taken the trouble to get his nomination paper signed by 10 residents? I think he owes the local people an explanation as to why he stood down? The result means there is now a second Councillor Dunne on Three Rivers council I wonder if they are related?

That Geoff Dunne is a closet Nazi? In which case produce the evidence to back this up.
Or possibly that people with the same surname are likely to have similar political views? In which case I wonder whether Colin Cox, the BNP candidate for the Scottish parliament is related to Steve Cox the Abbots Langley Labour party activist. Or possibly if Mike Jackson, the chairman of Watford Labour Party might be related to Christian Jackson, the BNP parliamentary candidate for Hyndburn.
And in any case would it matter if these Dunnes, Coxes and Jacksons were related? Does it make someone a bad person if one of their relatives is a Fascist, no matter what their own views are?
Most of us in the political mainstream -whatever our party loyalty - are shocked and disappointed that a Fascist has won in this part of Hertfordshire.
It's sad that you just see it as chance to smear a political opponent.

Imagine drawing a chalk line across a school blackboard. Above the line write interest, contact, dialogue, understanding and finally tolerance. Beneath it write dis-interest, shun, suspicion, anger and finally hate. We can all choose a path and I think that the latter is what some of the BNP and other right-wing voters do. It seems there is little learned from the Nazi era and some still think that attacking certain races will solve certain things. Hitler did not get that right and these guys don't either. In addition they always seem to lack having any actual policies or ways of building something constructive - other than often resulting to threats of violence.

"In addition they always seem to lack having any actual policies or ways of building something constructive - other than often resulting to threats of violence."
A bit like the labour party then.We all remember them using the prevention of terrorism act to keep hecklers away from their conference a few years ago resulting in a 70 odd year old Labour Party member being manhandled and assaulted by his own for uttering "shame on you"
As for having no real policies, whats the difference in having no policies or having policies and not achieving them? The results the same apart from the total waste of billions trying to implement them?As for attacking races, this government attacks its own..nuff said

A recent survey by Three Rivers found that a large majority of residents were happy with the way TR Council is run (public opinion), and this is born out by the elections, they didn't loose a seat. The BNP just appealed to a minority of 282, there were 552 who didn't vote for the BNP. This shows the complete inadequacy of our voting system. I bet in a Proportional Representative system the majority would not have put BNP as their second choice. It would then have been a far better representation of the feelings of South Oxhey residents

The reason the BNP got in is they listened to public opinion. If the bigger parties took a leaf out of the BNP\'s book, maybe they would have fared better.Councillors need to listen and learn,or a lot more of this will happen and its no good bleeting on about the peole who elect them as it is their democratic RIGHT to decide a councillor for THEIR ward.Look at Claire Ward,i think she is the biggest waste of space but i have to deal with it,thats democracy for ya.Maybe life in Oxhey is a litmus test for us all...........
You must be joking. A recent survey by Three Rivers found that a large majority of residents were happy with the way TR Council is run (public opinion), and this is born out by the elections, they didn\'t loose a seat. The BNP just appealed to a minority of 282, there were 552 who didn\'t vote for the BNP. This shows the complete inadequacy of our voting system. I bet in a Proportional Representative system the majority would not have put BNP as their second choice. It would then have been a far better representation of the feelings of South Oxhey residents
One man,one vote....Any other way is just smoke and mirrors. If its a dead heat...spin a coin

It just simply odd and unusual to have two councillors elected who live in the same ward who have the same surname (after all standing for election is not everyone's cup of tea). I remember another local paper ran a very good and interesting piece last year about husbands and wives, mother and son etc. standing for election. My point is I think the Watford Observer's election coverage such as it was this year was rather poor and superficial.

For all those individuals criticising the BNP, why don't you have a go at a real fascist party. One that will send you to an illegal war on a lie that has killed thousands of people, taxed you to poverty, produced an increased crime wave and given you mass unfettered and unrestricted immigration which has proved to be an economic lie and has presided over a debt fuelled economy calling it prudence. Ah yes, that is the respectable Labour Party.

It's sad that you just see it as chance to smear a political opponent.[/quote] I deplore the BNP and everything they stand for as much as many others who have commented here, however it is deeply insulting - and more than a little undignified - to label Mr Dunne a "Facist" when he is not.
Whatever you political persuasion, having far-right views or sympathies does not automatically make a person a Facist. Rightly or wrongly, Mr Dunne has been democratically elected and should no more be considered "fair game" for comments as offensive as this as any other political figure.
Jacques, no doubt you like to think of yourself as a very fair, "right on" person - shame on you.
