New leisure centres to open in a month
 |
| Mayor of Watford Dorothy Thornhill will have the keys to the town's new leisure centres within a month. |
The first of Watford's two brand new state-of-the-art leisure centres will open its doors to swimmers and fitness fanatics in just four weeks time, Watford Borough Council has announced.
Construction work has now been completed on the Woodside Leisure Centre - which houses a new 25 metre swimming pool equipped with retractable floor, a 100 station gymnasium and three large dance studio.
The building has now been formally handed over to the council and the leisure operator will now go about the task of filling the centre with treadmills, weights benches and massage tables before finally opening to the public on Saturday, June 7.
To mark the handover, a plaque was unveiled by Mayor of Watford, Dorothy Thornhill, Councillor Ann Shaw, leader of Three Rivers District Council and Gerard Pellikaan, owner of Pellikaan, the construction company that built the centre.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Mayor Thornhill said: "I'm delighted that the new leisure centre here at Woodside has been built on time and to budget.
"Looking around the completed centre today, it is clear to see that we made good decisions about quality. It will provide unrivalled facilities in the local area."
The completion of building work also represents a return on the £2m Three Rivers District Council invested in the rebuilding on the centres.
However, Councillor Shaw said the new facilities would be a benefit to residents in Three Rivers as well as those in Watford.
She said: "By working together, Watford has achieved a competition sized pool and all Three Rivers residents have discounted access to excellent new facilities, including the pool.
"This will be especially welcome to residents in the north of the district."
Together with the redevelopment of Watford Central Baths the councils have invested £21m in the rebuilding of the town's leisure centres.
The Hempstead Road leisure centre is expected to open in August.
