Boothroyd set to switch formation

Aidy Boothroyd is understood to be considering shelving his favoured 4-4-2 formation and switching to a 4-3-3 for the first-leg of the play-off semi-final with Hull City.

The manager worked on the idea with his players during a double training session on Wednesday and is aiming to catch Tigers boss Phil Brown by surprise with a new-look set-up that will see Lionel Ainsworth and Jobi McAnuff flank Nathan Ellington, the lone striker, in attack.

Ainsworth, who will get the nod ahead of Tamas Priskin, and McAnuff will take their place in a five-man midfield when Watford are defending as Boothroyd bids to solve the problem of his side being counter-attacked at Vicarage Road.

The switch will see Tommy Smith, the Player of the Season, moved to a more central role in a game-plan that will see the Hornets adopt a more fluid and measured approach in the absence of Darius Henderson.

Great move Watford Observer - leaking our change of tactics to the opposition on the eve of the big game.

Make sure you post a copy of this article in the Hull City dressing room, just in case they missed it.

Unless...it's an amazing double-bluff by Aidy and we're really going to see Tamas Priskin as a lone front man. <GULP> Oh God. <WIPES SWEAT FROM BROW> I hope not.

We may as well go for it. If we play as we have been doing we have no chance. Virtually all the experts were tipping Palace today and look what happened there.

Sounds good but will the players make it work?

With the players available it gives us about the best shot- as long as we do shoot. No disrespect to Priskin but no contest in a choice of him and LA.

Doubt it..lone front men have to work hard and run.

Mind you Ellington doesn't exactly strike me as a hard worker either bt has ability I am sure!?

Only front man we have is Danny boy..And hes our centre half.
This is the time to catch Hull they looked bit shell shocked last sunday.
If we sit back they will wipe the floor with us, but if we went 3 5 2 and had a good go at them we might shock them.. And how i and most of us need to be shocked.... Heres hoping and praying...

Great news to hear of this formation which we have been crying out for. Tommy will be the danger man in his "floating" role.

Don't worry about leaking tactics in advance, any method to fool Hull is a good method.

Aidy has been talking up Priskin all week! There will be twists and turns over the next two matches, and the mind games started a week ago!

Gary Johnson at Bristol has changed his tactics too, bringing back Trundle, Carle and Noble who can "handle the pressure" in his own words.

From a side on as bad a run as ours, he has now seen back-to-back wins over Preston and Palace. They are not free-flowing anymore, but they have become very effective as we all saw yesterday.

Let us hope and pray that the same will happen for us today, and give us a valuable lead to take to Humberside.

Change of plan sounds good all round to me to me. Can't be worse than it has been by all reports can it!! I am now feeling very positive and excited the football channel here has changed its programming today and the game is showing as being live at 7 o clock. Elton was playing live the other night at the indoor arena maybe he he's pulled some strings and is watching somewhere. Come on you ORNS!!!!

Ditch the black shorts and wear the red ones - this season our poor form has a lot to do with the colours. Trust me on this one.

Colour is vibrating energy just like everything else in this frequency range we call planet earth.

Now where is my turquoise shell suit?
