Hornets appeal Eustace red
Watford have lodged an appeal against John Eustace's controversial sending off in yesterday's defeat to Hull.
The skipper was dismissed by referee Kevin Friend in the second half of the game for a challenge on Richard Garcia despite making minimal contact and tripping over the player.
The appeal will be reviewed and a decision whether Eustace can play in the return leg at Hull will be announced by tomorrow.
Manager Aidy Boothroyd said: "For the John Eustace sending off both feet were on the floor so I don't know what he was sending him off for."

I can't believe their manager said it was for a headbutt. What a pillock, Eustace was nowhere near nutting anyone!!!

This is the second time in the last 2 months that JE has got himself sent off, in pressure games.
Its a poor example all round within the team, and he's supposed to be the captain and team leader.
As far as I'm concerned from where I sat in the East stand, he deserved to be cautioned (as did some of the Hull players)
JE's sending off changed the whole momentum of the game, when we were well on top and could easily have reduced the deficit. Once he was sent off we could easily have gone 3 down. The job on Wednesday is now far more difficult than it might have been.
He's demonstrated that he's not fit to be team captain.

I was chatting to a Stoke fan other day who said JE was a brilliant player until he was injured and never felt he ever recovered. Did he avoid a medical like the other crocks? How would have NE passed any form of medical, he looks tired walking up the tunnell.
Maybe we should apply to Welsh FA to have his red card overturned.
Mr Fiend should be ashamed of his performance yesterday.

Chris, he is a good captain, if you actually noticed his input during the game rallying players and keeping them going you'd realise this. It was not a red card. He passed the ball well also, spread the play. Typical crusty east stander!!

Although the sending off was harsh i am afraid when you get a reputation it sticks ,the HULL players as BOOTHROYD said knew what they were doing and targeted EUSTACE and he fell for it hook line and sinker as you know BOOTHROYD others can use gamesmanship aswell ,I thought when he arrived at club he was ok ,better than Mahon i don't know , BUT since he "proved" himself and got the capataincy he has been POOR ,he has relaxed now he has capataincy AND at same time another player IN DEMERIT has been messed around and now is unsettled ? another poor decision Mr BOOTHROYD !

some fans should stop picking holes and talking bo**ocks !
The goal should have stood and then a totally different result would and should have happened.
It was never a sending off and although Eustace hasnt played well during the last five games he quite obviously motivates the team on the pitch (to say he shows a bad example is nonsense as both sendings off were harsh and neither malicous)...
Some people just come on here to moan whatever and its pathetic.
Summary for yesterday and how most football fans would see it .
1/Best WFC played for a long time
2/ 2 mistakes for goals cost us dearly
3/ 2 horrendous decisions went against us
4/ Hull goalkeeper was inspired
5/ we cant finish and our strikers are not good enough
We dont deserve to go up on the second half of the season but we are still in with a small chance and we do have the best away record and fans in the division.. lets hope and prey and if not get ready for another competitive championship season that will be harder than ever...
And remember there is no chance of boothroyd going anywhere unless he resigns and I doubt that very much, If we dont see any improvement in the first 10 games of next season (in results and style of play) then His end will come anyway ... So lets get behind the boys now and next season whatever comes our way and stay positive ... yellow army !!!

The Hornets did far better yesterday but there are two fundamental reasons why the manager should go. Firstly and most importantly he has almost totally failed in the transfer market paying over the odds for very mediocre players who have not contributed to the performance of the team, Secondly, he seems to have no idea of tactics. This has meant that we have done really badly over the last six months or so. If we remain in the Championship these two faults in the Manager will almost certainly mean that we will not succeed and the football will be just as dire.

I agree with most of your post Peter and it was a delight to see us play football again. Whilst your comments re Aidy are almost certainly right it is a major worry. We will be losing some good players at knock down fees, probably not retaining Rinaldi , and having to give Aidy his choice of signings. If they are all brought in to support the bang it to Henderson route they will be of little use to our new manager 10 games into the season! I still think Aidy can be a good manager in the long term but we all need some sort of comfort that he will review the failed playing style of this year.

Surely the sending off was because of the clearcut pushing the Eustace did after the initial tackle. We all know the rules, and whether we like them or not, it was a needless action which was only going to lead to him being sent off. And a great shame - it was the best we've played for months!

point 2 - he proved yesterday that he can change his style and set the team up to play football...life is about making mistakes and learning from them, it is quite plain to see that he is getting the message. What we need now is for the chairman to be strong and tell him to get somebody in to take the pressure off, next year I dont want to see him wasting his time talking to the WO, giving edvidence for asylum seekers or buying drinks in the Rookery. I want him to focus on doing what he does best, working with the players and nothing else. Job done.

Had we played more of a passing game (like yesterday) as opposed to hoofball over the last six months we would probably have finished higher up the table.
I thought the performance was one of the best, if not [bold]the[/bold] best at home this season.
The Eustace decision was ridiculous and will be overturned.

great to see us playing football. lets take that into next season, whatever division. As for Aidy,s signings, yes some have being terrible, but dont forget some of the great GTs signings, Dom Foley, springs to mind, and what about Ray L or G Vs. On paper NE looked a sure thing to be a big championship player, and the 3 new boys started brightly. Anyway Theos back 4 next season, so looking forward to it already. Just dont screw it up Aidy, no more hoofball..

I think Peter Parker has summed up the game well, but a few other posters need a massive reality check.
"Best support in the division?" We should be embarassed that there were so many empty seats yesterday. The free flags and the idiot with the microphone created an atmosphere more like a netball arena than a semi final to get into the Premiership.
And guess who is to blame for the sending off? Anyone but Eustace it would seem. JE did the reckless challenge, and he shoved his opposite number right under the referree's nose. He has let everyone down.
Hull finished third and rising. We were sixth and and in free-fall. We played well yesterday but the league doesn't lie.

The Hull player was no 4 Ian Ashbee....from my position in the Family enclosure , East stand he appeared to stamp on Eustace , which is why Eustace got so annoyed. We were screaming at the linesman /referee that it was the no 4 , that started it ,but unbelievable ( or not as they were obviously frightened of Brown) he just told Ashbee to calm down. Totally out of order decision. Coincidentally , after the match I bumped into this thug outside the gates , talking to his family. I told him he was a cheating cowardly thug and this went of for a few minutes. He kept saying "did the ref see it ?". Anyway , rather childishly , as the coach left he sat at the back making "V" signs and others at me. ..oh and yes , he asked if I was going Wed ( which I am )....he said " I'll see you there then" inferring he might want to continue our arguement. Phil Brown was the worse behaved manager I've seen in the dugout..continually bullying the 4th official , once pushing him about physically ...he went on the pitch more than once..his swearing was gutter trash and the officials were obviously too frightened to do anything ( made Warnock look angelic) .No wonder they got all the decisions. Obviously didn't see the match on Tv , but a Sky reporter who I spoke to afterwards was utterly perplexed with the disallowed goal , sending off and Priskins booking. No, despite what has gone on this season , we were unlucky on Sunday. We played well , on another day would have scored 3 or 4 goals and with a decent/ fair ref would have won comfortably. Its not over yet , so long as the ref on Wednesday isn't in Hulls pocket ...

JE tried to win a loose ball whilst Garcia was lying on the deck but connected with what looked like the back of his thigh. Cue some sort of death roll from Garcia. Ashbee (HCFC skipper) then ran 20 yards to start the pushing & shoving and escapes with a "don't be a naughty boy again" warning. How was JE's shove (as that seems to be what the media are quoting as the reason he was sent off) any worse than Ashbee's actions?

According to Sky, JE was sent off for the challenge - no mention of the pushing. Reading various media reports then there seems to be conflicting views as to the red card. I fear that this ref will cover his backside in the appeal by using the push to justify the initial decision for the red card. Unbelievably, this ref is seen as one of the up and coming future elite referees so there is a lot at stake for him not to have this decison overturned.

Exactly - a push is a push. JE should know better as captain and should be fined by the club for jeopardising the play off hopes.

Surely the sending off was because of the clearcut pushing the Eustace did after the initial tackle. It was a yellow for JE and for the dirty Hull player that provoked him.
A push is a push, and it doesn,t need to be in the face for it to be a red card..
Sorry, meant to add....Horns 1st goal & hull cave in....If not...Get rid of the not so good, and lets build with youth, and get a settled squad..

Official Club website reporting JE's red card overturned so he's available tomorrow night. Should be interesting, then...
Same article states we've had three of our six red cards overturned and in total that cost us 84 minutes of football with 10 men whilst the refs escape with no public censure or apology for their mistakes. Pathetic.

So the FA have not agreed with the decision. I would love to know what they thought of the disallowed goal!! If only they could give that back to us. I wonder why half the red cards we have received this season were rescinded by the FA - do you think the refs have something against Watford or are 50% of all red cards rescinded in the Championship and the refs are just s*ite? Questions need to be asked.
Anyway this was not a match that Mr Kevin A Friend can look back on with pride.

I didn't think that JE was sent off for a push - my first impression of the incident was that he had aimed a kick at a Hull player. Watching the replay, it looked fairly clear that he swung at what he thought was a bouncing ball - but a wfc leg actually trapped the ball on the ground at the same time, leaving him to swing at nothing & fall over after connecting with Garcia - he actually appeared to try to pull out of the kick. That's when Ashbee came rushing in - if anyone had to go, it was him.
It's all moot now anyway, but I still think that it's time for the FA to stop the game in cases such as this, and allow video evidence to make the decisions - referees are becoming increasingly unreliable.
