Magnificent seven honoured

Seven police officers and police staff have been commended for exceptional good work within Hertfordshire Constabulary's Western division.

  • Detective Constable Tom Eykelbosch from the Case Investigation Team based in Hemel Hempstead has received the Frank Mason Memorial Award 2008.
  • PCSO Steve Shaw based at Kings Court police station in Watford was named Western Area Western Area PCSO of the Year.
  • Detective Constable Toby Roberts based in Watford was presented with the Chris Taylor Award for Policing Excellence for his outstanding work in the intelligence unit.
  • Special Sergeant Steve Roughton received the Western Area Special of the Year award.
  • Detention and Escort Officer Matt Webster received the Area Police Staff Award.
  • Area Commander's Commendations have gone to Shazia Shah who received an award for her work for the Sunflower Centre - which is seen as a centre of excellence for looking after victims of domestic violence and race hate crime and is viewed as amongst best practice nationally.
  • Dacorum's Chief Inspector Paul Newell received an Area Commander's Commendation for his outstanding' partnership working over the years.

I'm afraid I find this modern trend for giving people awards simply for doing a job they are paid to do quite ridiculous. They choose to do a job and they are paid good money for it, so why do they expect awards and plaudits as well? It seems to me that this vogue for giving people awards is just a filter-down from the even more absurd showbiz and media awards.
