Ten months after they received plans to build the Watford Health Campus, councillors are due to deliver a verdict on the £1 billion project tonight.

However, the meeting is expected to be the subject of a demonstration from environmentalists who are opposed to the construction of a new road on playing fields close to Oxhey Park.

A 2,000 planning document, described by planners as "the biggest application Watford has ever seen", was originally submitted to Watford Borough Council for consideration in July last year.

The council's planning committee then sat through the first of two meetings to debate the plans in December.

However, the scheme has since been delayed due to a "holding objection" from the Highways Agency. The agency had concerns about the impact the development would have on the M1 and requested further analysis be undertaken.

Council officers have now recommended the scheme for approval and the Highways Agency were expected to drop its objection before the meeting.

The council's development control committee was expected to grant planning permission at the town hall, last night.

If the scheme is passed a brand new hospital will be built on the existing Watford General site, along with hundreds of key worker homes, a hotel, office and restaurants.

The controversial link road, which will be built on park land next to the Watford Irish Club on Wiggenhall Road, also remains part of the project.

Watford Friends of the Earth are expected to stage a demonstration outside the town hall prior to the meeting in protest at the road.

I hope we get our new Hospital despite these demonstrators.
I believe this is more important, we are desperate for new, clean, up to date facilities. Please, all councillors ignore these people.

It's very revealing that when the link road was part of the last Labour Administrations District Plan, Downhill Dorothy and her Munchkins campaigned vigorously against it - another trip down the Yellow Brick Road - still that's Fib Dems for you - no consistency.

Igloo, I agree with you completely but this is about Watford getting new hospital. All political parties are the same and lie through their teeth!

And Claire Ward has delivered it in the teeth of strong opposition from all the other constituencies vying for it!

The real point about the West Watford Relief Road as it was originally called (now the "link" Road) was what it said on the label - to get all the heavy traffic going to Tolpits Lane, Watford Business Park, etc., etc., off the residential streets of West Watford. This was boshed by a coalition of the Friends of the Earth teaming up with Watford and Three Rivers Fib Dems! I've always thought it was a bit of a cheek for 3 Rivers to approve all that Industrial Development in Tolpits Lane but then veto the improvement of access to it.

Actually guys the proposed Link Road is NOT the West Watford Relief Road. It only serves the Campus and is NOT a through road onto Vicarage Road or any other to the North. Neither can the vehicles using Wiggenhall Road turn onto the Link Road towards Dalton Way and use it as a by-pass, although they WILL be able to turn towards the hospital. I understand the previous iteration of the road was opposed by a number of political parties. The difference now is that it will be serving a new hospital, a hotel and conferencing facility and new business units (only the business units would have served by the previous iteration of the road).

Well it should be given the amount of money going into all this - a number of political parties you say? The Tories and Labour supported it - do you mean Downhill Dorothy's Munchkins the Fib Dems and that wannabe Liberal the noisey one?

Where's it gone - I emailed the link to Claire Ward asking her what she was doing about the whole project being on hold - she emailed me back saying she had called the minister - and bingo the WO withdraw the piece - looks like everythings back on for tonight shows you what a good MP we've got!

I believe the article was actually withdrawn after I spoke with the appropriate journalist. Seeing as the article was profoundly misleading and contained several inaccuracies this was entirely appropriate. I'm not a resident of Watford, but I am sure Claire Ward is an excellent MP. She has been VERY supportive of the Stakeholders who are delivering the Campus and has helped with our lobbying efforts on behalf of the Croxley Rail Link. I do not however recognise your rather sad caricature and name calling of the Borough Council who have been extremely supportive and proactive in the Campus and without who NONE of this would have been happening.

Typical Labour, taking the credit for something they haven't done, because they've done nothing that they can claim credit for.
