Residents in Rickmansworth, Chorleywood, Croxley Green, Sarratt, Moor Park, and South Oxhey are now living in an official Fairtrade district.
More than 100 campaigners have gathered at the offices of Three Rivers District Council to receive an award of recognition from the Fairtrade Foundation - a pressure group campaigning for a fairer deal for third world producers.
Community groups, shops, businesses and schools from throughout the district were all represented and have pledged to do all they can to maintain the title.
Jane Brading, of the Three Rivers Fairtrade Group, said: "By choosing to support Fairtrade we have added our voice to demands for a trade system that puts people, not profit, first.
"It sends a powerful message about how our community wants trade to work."
There are now more than 300 Fairtrade areas in the UK. This model is now being copied in 15 other countries around the world.
