Aidy to 'wheel and deal'

AIDY BOOTHROYD is facing the prospect of having to sell before he can buy as he sets about reshaping his Watford squad over the summer and altering their style of play following this week's play-off disappointment.

The Hornets' hopes of bouncing back from Sunday's 2-0 first leg reversal and setting up a £60m winner-takes-all showdown with Bristol City at Wembley next weekend were dashed by Hull City on Wednesday night, who claimed a flattering 6-1 aggregate victory.

Following the harsh 4-1 second leg defeat at the KC Stadium Boothroyd revealed that he needs to see "where we can raise some money". This comes after chairman Graham Simpson's admission that cuts in expenditure would be required if the club did not return to the Premiership at the first attempt, although it is not yet clear what "Plan B" will involve.

But Boothroyd's need to "wheel and deal" following the failure to achieve promotion will probably mark the end of several players' careers at Vicarage Road.

Dan Shittu and Nathan Ellington are among Watford's more saleable assets and would command significant transfer fees. Both have been linked with moves back to the top-flight in the past, with Boothroyd rebuffing an approach from Paul Jewell - Ellington's former boss at Wigan Athletic - to take him to Derby County in January.

It is understood the likes of Damien Francis, Will Hoskins, Matt Jackson and Mart Poom could be moved on as the Hornets manager seeks to reduce the wage bill, while questions have also been raised over Jay DeMerit's future. The American centre-half was restored to the starting line-up at Hull after Shittu was ruled out with a hamstring injury, but his opportunities have been limited since Leigh Bromby was signed in the last transfer window.

But while the fans wait and see who will be coming and going during what promises to be, by the manager's own admission, a busy summer, many will be heartened by his admission that the Hornets need to change how they play. And perhaps with the criticism he has received from some quarters in mind, Boothroyd will also be aiming to entertain.

"We do need to adapt and change and be cuter in what we do," said the manager on Wednesday night. "We've been successful with what we have done but all good things come to an end. It will be a very, very busy summer and we'll need to nail things down in pre-season, but hopefully we'll win and entertain.

"I'll have to be a Del Boy and do a bit of wheeling and dealing," he continued. "It may be a case of starting again for us. We need to take a good look at ourselves, but we'll be alright because we've got a core of good staff, a core of good players and good youngsters."

Despite the five-goal margin of defeat in the play-offs, there were encouraging signs in both games that the shift towards a more passing-based approach could be productive in the long-term with Watford's flair players, in particular, given greater licence to express themselves.

"There is work to be done on the style as we conceded four goals but we've got a good foundation," remarked Boothroyd after the second leg. "We have had to change what we do because it wasn't working.

"Should it have changed earlier? Perhaps but it takes months and months and we had to change mainstays of the side like Gav and Marlon. We will come back early in pre-season and work at how we are going to play.

"Maybe it's time to build a new team, get a few in and get a few out. I like winning and I like entertaining, but it's about understanding and making decisions at right times. But we are going to have a crack at it.

"I've got to look at the squad, see what needs adjusting and maybe be a bit more ruthless.

"I need to have an assessment of players we have got and see where we can raise some money and perhaps give youth its head. We've got Tamas, Theo, Al Bangura, O'Toole, Ainsworth and Loach. They have all got a really good chance.

"I've got some decisions to make but my aim is to entertain and win. And that's what we'll look to do," the Watford boss added.

Mr CHAIRMAN . OK Aidy did loose it with the long ball tactics, BUT lets not forget you Mr Chairman told him & us that there was plenty of money for players and the money for the rebuild was "ringfenced" - Now we are in debt. Mr Chairman... explain now . Estimate of 25 million from Premiership
£9 million for Ashley
£4 million for Bouazza
£3 million for KING
£1 million for forrester
Millions from the selling of the corners of the ground
WHERE HAS THE MONEY GONE
To be faced with having to sell i.e SHITTU / SMITH /ELLINGTON as only probable assets ,to be able to spend is a total failure in the running of the club ANSWERS NOW NEEDED no more spin let's have the truth PERHAPS TIME NOW FOR A FANS FORUM

1. Getting rid of Francism, Poom, Jackson and Hoskins - fine.

2. Selling Ellington - fine if we get as much as we paid for him.

3. Selling Big Dan - bad move.

4. Selling Demerit - sad but fine as long as we get good money for him and can buy cover.

5. Relying on Priskin, Robinson, Bangura, O'Toole, Ainsworth and Loach - not good enough.

6. Where has all the money gone? Can Elton buy us a couple of players?

Berks Horn says 'Can Elton buy us a couple of players?'.
I thought we were past this. We cannot reply on a benefactor to keep bailing us out.

Playing better football is the way forward. We have just showed that we can be all-too-easily beaten doing what we do now. We must adapt, particularly if we want to survive if we get promoted. Keith Burkenshaw was surely right about that. And if he left because of disagreements with Aidy about this, maybe Aidy will be big enough to swallow his pride and ask him back. They were doing well together. They could do again.

I, for one, would be looking forward to next season if we do change our style.

Where has the money gone? Most of it on the debt we owe from the dark days of 2002-2004 I'd imagine. Loans etc were taken out to keep the club going. Increased wages and running costs from being in the Premier League. With all the dealings with clubs and their boardroom battles (e.g Liverpool, Newcastle, Spurs, B'ham etc.) I don't really want to see change for change's sake.

Let's remember, there's not all of this cash sitting under GS desk from Young, King and the PL tv cash etc. it comes with clauses, parachute payments etc and we missed out on the TV deal that Derby et Al have benefited from and all this kind of stuff and remember we are in the Championship now, so our income has evaporated.

I, along with all of you suffered through the second half of the season. I was thinking 'what the hell am I doing here?' as we lost to Barnsley and Scunthorpe but we have to look at the bigger picture. Charlton and Sheff U finished nowhere (Spent more cash than us), Wolves, Norwich, Southampton, Coventry are all bigger than us and Leicester went down so it's not the end of the universe to get the playoffs. that's what I hoped for this season and I'm gutted we went out but maybe we all (fans, players, mgr, board) needed a bit reality check.

We are punching above our weight still and long may it continue but when players want to go (King) or big clubs come in with the big cash (Young), we will sell due to our size unless we get 10,000 extra for every home match (not likely with our current home form :) ) and a sizeable investment in us.

Hopefully this season has taught AB a lesson about tactics, team selection and SUBSTITUTIONS!!!!

It's been a long, hard season but hopefully we can start afresh next season with a bit less booing and some better football on the pitch.

Dave, Holborn says...

I've been asking all season about the money for the ground and every time I get a load of abuse back. My trouble is that I have heard straight from Mark Ashton's mouth that the money is "ring-fenced" and that it is NOT dependent on what division we find ourselves in. This usually prompts a few replies saying things like "it is, but if we are in the championship we move to a different plan". I've no problem with this as I am more interested in what happens on the pitch rather than off, but I just wonder why Ashton said this in the first place? I'm personally not too bothered about not going up as, if we did and then received the £60m/£70m/£80m or whatever it is today, then based on previous evidence we would probably waste most of it anyway (or it would dissappear into the "black hole")

Berks Horn, London says...
1:29pm Fri 16 May 08

Steve, i think there was a general agreement that we played a different, more exciting style in the last two games. Problem is we still got beaten.

Playing football is one thing. Playing football with style and winning is another. For the latter you need quality players and we are sadly lacking in certain areas. Relying on Al Bangura and John Joe O'Toole in that area doesn't cut it I'm afraid. My comment about Elton was maybe a bit fascetious but we need an injection of cash to buy in some quality if the money from the sales of Ash, Marlon and Hameur have dried up as they seem to have done.

At last some sense from Boothroyd. And also great to hear that we are gonna clean out some players and give the kids a chance. Its the way we should always be doing it, not spending big on individuals like Ellington. Bristol City are a reminder of this.

Let Shittu go, word is he doesnt want to be here anyway. On his day he is great, but only if we are plaing a direct team. He is big but certainly not clever. We will make a loss on The Duke but hopefully a profit on shittu. I would love to see Calumport back.

I wanted AB out but Im happy to see him stay and learn from all the mistakes of this season. There are so many! Hopefully he can then reproduce some of his early promise and be a better manager.

If Aidy has to 'wheel and deal' then he may as well take one of those 18 job offers and get out.

His record in the transfer market is shocking and he has been taken for a mug by experienced managers like Warnock and Jewell.

There is no evidence that Aisy gets out and about watching lower league games and matches abroad, so why should he be trusted to spend any money that comes in from the sale of Shittu (I can't believe that many other players will generate a positive sale price when deductions to pay off their contracts with WFC are taken into account)?

After his initial success with signings that he knew from his time at Leeds (Spring, Carlisle and King) then he does not seem to have any sort of scouting infrastructure in place that identifies and recruits players who can improve both the team and add value to the price that has been paid.

Lionel Ainsworth is the only player that fits into the 'up and coming' category and he was only seen because we were monitoring Diagouraga and Robinson who were on loan at Hereford.

Aidy appears to be more likely to be sitting at home in Bromsgrove than at a non-league or foreign ground watching a potential signing.

In the nears bankrupt days of the 1990's the best signings came from non-league Phillips, Hessenthaler and Furlong (accepted that he had to go to Coventry briefly beforehand).

As the cash from the transfer surplus and Premiership seems to have gone somewhere, I hope that I am wrong and there is now a strong infrastructure in place to identify coveted up and coming players.

wake up yourself on your calculations allowing for a bit more even, you account for around £25 million EVEN though your figures are wrong as in the case of Bromby and sadler 1.5 for the pair !

We got a very conservative figure of £25 MILLION JUST FROM BEING IN PREMIERSHIP in fact it is nearer to £30 mill, add the other figures up and you get a very conservative £46 million IN ,AND take away the wages paid to KING 22K A WEEK 1 million a year !,wages to Young/Bouazza/Mahon/
I still say WHERE HAS THE OTHER 20 ODD MILL GONE !

Yes time to rebuild and offload some of the more expensive players and saleable assets.

Take a loss on Ellington (may come back to haunt us but not happy), sell Shittu & DeMerit. Should raise over £6Million and enough to buy 3 to 4 replacements. Could raise something by selling Priskin who has had a very poor season indeed.

Also need to prune the squad if we can ie Jackson, Poom and several others to allow some youngsters into the squad.

Would keep Smith, McAnuff, Hendo, Bromby, Sadler, O'Toole, Eustace, Loach & probably Lee as the nucleus (Lee's form was good earlier on but has suffered because of the poor defending in front of him).

Not sure what we can expect from Willliams or Francis after the long-term injuries but potential buyers will also be wary because of this.

It's going to be a very interesting summer indeed.

Let's stop the moaning and give Aidy a chance. His record here deserves that for sure.

Keep the Faith.

You are a master at proving that you know nothing, continually calling John Eustace useless is a total insult and proves you know nothing about football. Gavin Mahon is no longer on the payroll and is very happily recieving £17k per week from the richest club in britain, that will never win anything

Even if we were rollling in funds I would want Aidy to reduce the squad. I would also want him to justify signing players before he is allowed the funds. He has too many players who will never get a start unless there is a virus and a hatful of suspensions: Poom, Jackson, Rinaldi, Hoskins, Kabba and at least 3 of his backroom staff would be the first on my list. If he is looking to strengthen in specific positions then he will need to get rid of one of the players playing there or covering in that position (eg if he takes on a right back he can afford to let Doyley or Mariappa go) but he must get in someone who is better than what he has and who can play to the new style he is intending to employ. He needs advice and should listen to his scouts and others who have seen those players play - there are plenty in or around the game who would be happy to give him their opinion.

The biggest concern is where the funds have gone, as pointed out by SIMMO in the first post on this topic. That is something that should be asked to Messrs Simpson and Ashton - but I should imagine there have been a number off large pay outs to people who have left the club amongst the unknown expenses.

Overall though I think we have a good squad for next season if we continue to play the sort off fotball we played against Hull.

this may well be a waste of your reading time.

i have absolutely nothing original to say and can only echo the notion that i'll enjoy next season more if we are playing real football.

i don't know the ins and outs of the finances but feel no money's going to be spent on the team until the east stand is finished.

i've been a happy clapper all season and will continue to be so but i'm off for a year or more in october and don't have to put up with what many of you will. we all know the "punching above your weight" thing is a cliche but the fact that expectations were raised so high so early has made it seem even more hollow.

i guess we will have a couple of championship years. we can't expect much more with the way money is coming into the game and we're not getting any. i would happily have seen us go up and do a derby because that cash would've made a difference.

i don't know where the supposedly missing money has gone but i know that we are going to miss it even more come 2009/2010.

in the meantime, and i am sure i will post again, i want to say that (bar the silly name calling) i've enjoyed my first season posting on this site.

guys, keep the expectations low and you'll be a lot happier (Seneca).

So I reckon we will have a small squad of 2 players per position. The squad I expect to see next season is...

GK1 New
GK2 Loach

RB1 Mariappa
RB2 New

LB1 Sadler
LB2 Parkes

CB1 Bromby
CB2 Avinel
CB3 New
CB4 New

RM1 Smith
RM2 New

LM1 McAnuff
LM2 Ainsworth

CM1 Eustace
CM2 O'Toole
CM3 Williamson
CM4 Williams

F1 Priskin
F2 Robinson
F3 D Henderson
F4 New

You can work out yourself who WONT be here from that list. Most those leaving will be frees and through choice, a couple will want to leave.

I expect 2-4 of the "new" players will be loan signings.

What do you reckon?

I see that full-back Anthony Gardner(Spurs) may be on the move and Everton did not want to sign him after having him on loan. I think he is a Left/Centre back. On the right Stephen Wright has been released by Sunderland. Could Aidy be interested in them? Both would strengthen the squad - Gardner is more experienced than Jordan Parkes and can fill in at left or centre back and Wright is better than both Doyley and Mariappa.

Could it be possible that Ben Foster might be available to loan until Christmas, as he will still be 3rd Choice at Man U and deserately needs first team experience? Also if Boro sign Milner and keep Downing, where will that leave Adam Johnson?

Scotshorn. I had started that way then gave up, I agree Mariappa is far from an obvious starting XI player and also agree Avinel more likely to be 4th choice.

The thing with the squad that will be kept is their wages. Give youth their chance also means keep the lower paid players.

Unfortuantly that will be a neccesity.

Still, I reckon from the sales we do we would raise roughly £6M. If we get in say 3 loans and a couple more buys in the Eustace, Bromby, Sadler mould with similar fees we could have say £3m to buy a proven goalscorer. As long as we play the football seen in the play-offs I'll be optimistic of challenging for the play-offs again.
