An Abbots Langley man convicted of shop lifting, criminal damage and driving without insurance or a licence has escaped a jail sentence.

Spencer Simpson, 29, of South Way stole £150 of shopping from the Co Op in New Road, Croxley Green on Thursday, November 29 and was caught driving a van in January just days after damaging a window in Tudor Way, Rickmansworth.

At Dacorum Magistrates Court yesterday, Richard Yap, prosecuting, said Simpson, who has numerous previous convictions, had entered the Co-Op store, filled up a trolley, walked out without making any attempt to pay, got in a car and drove off.

Simpson had previously pleaded guilty and sentencing had been adjourned.

Patrick O'Reilly, defending, conceded his client had been before the courts on a number of occasions. Simpson had suffered problems in his formative years, but was working to deal with his difficulties, which include past substance abuse, he said.

Simpson asked for three other offences of theft to be taken into consideration, including a theft from the Shell petrol station in Croxley Green in January.

Chairman of the bench Mr Craigan went along with probation's recommendation in the report and imposed an 18-month community order, which includes a ten-day basic skills course.

He was given six points for the motoring offences.

The bench ordered that £398.96 be taken deducted from Simpson's benefits.

Six points for no licence or insurance is a complete joke when you can be banned for driving down St Albans Road at 35 mph at 3am in the morning.

If Patrick O`Reilly honestly belives that this man is dealing with his problems, will he be held responsible when he re offends (because he will)?

Perhaps if his next offence is thieving from Mr O`Reilly or Mr Craigan they might think again.

Or when his crashes his uninsured vechile into one of theirs.

"Three other offences to be taken into consideration" Which were ?

"The bench has ordered that £398.96 be deducted from Simpsons benefits" Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha

If he can afford to run a vehicle why does he get benefits ?

Whilst there is absolutely no deterent for constant repeat offenders why should they change their thieving, cheating ways. The police can not touch them and they know it.

Shame on you Mr Reilly for defending such scum and shame on you Mr Craigan for not having the balls to hand out a proper punishment.

It is about time that the victims have some say in the sentences that are dished out.

Society needs to fight back because we get no protection from the law.

Simpson is probably in the pub celebrating now planning his next job.

What a joke, no wonder we are in such a state, what sort of message does this send out, send the idiot to prison, I had a rough upbringing and my formative years were tough, but I chose not to go down the criminal route and do something with my life, this magistrate should be sacked for incompetence along with the other do gooders wrecking our society.

This is the kind of scum that will end up killing someone...
Then the inquest into the poor person's death will then say that something should have been done earlier for this piece of sh-it.
Give me 20 minutes with him in a room and a lead pipe and I'll make sure that he won't committ a crime ever again....

I never thought that i would say this but i feel sorry for the Police. They catch this low life scumbag for the umpteenth time and put him in court and he is let of scott free again. What a morale booster for them ! At least when further crimes are comitted in the area they know which door to go knocking on.

Plead guilty and you get away with it???? Welcome to lawless Britain. I definalty feel that I have taken the wrong route in life: I work hard, pay my taxes, bills and am law abiding whilst others can have a cushty life!

Society deserves to be rid of individuals like this and when the powers that be fail to do so, then we know that this country is falling into decline.

What about the victims of this persistent offender?

Did the magistrates think of them when making this decision?

Sadly the answer is clear.

Skint is right in his comments - this makes the hard work and effort by the Police seem worthless.

With the cumulation of failures and errors that we seem to read about on an almost daily basis, I fear that one day the good people of this country may just want to leave this land and live elsewhere.
