Firefighters have said a fire alarm saved an elderly woman's life after a blaze ravaged her home this afternoon.

The house, in Westbury Road, Northwood, caught fire after the woman mistakenly turned on an electric heater instead of turning off her television set.

Flames then quickly caught hold of the kitchen while the elderly woman was upstairs.

However, after her alarm sounded the woman was able to stumble to the door and even managed to phone the emergency services.

Two crews, both from Watford fire station, were called to the blaze at 1.37pm and left two hours later after dampening down and ventilating the house.
