Blazing sign makes union position clear over police 'outsourcing'
This 30ft high flaming sign spelled out police workers’ objection to a plan to outsource some of Hertfordshire's back office police functions to a private company.
The sign, spelling out the words Keep Policing Public, was set ablaze as the finale to a rally held in Stevenage on Wednesday by trade union UNISON.
The union is waging an ongoing campaign against plans being discussed by Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire police forces to outsource back office functions to a private company. G4S is the preferred candidate.
UNISON vice president Maureen Le Marinel said: "I call upon chief constables and the ACPO (association of chief police officers) to speak out before it’s too late.
"Look around at what is happening to the forces who have entered into these contracts and ask yourselves ‘would you be satisfied with the service?’."
The final decision on whether to outsource will be made by the new police and crime commissioner for Hertfordshire, who is due to be elected on November 15.

I am not a candidate but may I ask on what grounds it has been ruled out by Labour?
Has the Labour candidate seen all the information regarding the proposed outsourcing?
One might have fairly thought the information would only be available in its entirety to the elected PCC, who would then take professional advice before deciding on the outcome?
What are her reasons for ruling it out now?
I am not a fan of outsourcing but it does seem a bit opportunistic and irresponsible to rule something out without knowing what it is exactly you are ruling out and why.
Irresponsible and opportunistic - now whoever would have thought that of a Labour politician trying to get elected?

We need decent politicians, we don't often get them. Remember Claire Ward?

My experience of the current incumbent (for the time being), Rich Harrington is of a more doubtful nature. Given the off-shoring of the bulk of the shares to Mauritius of company in which he is a director, I can't help wondering if this is to avoid tax and if so how much he has managed to duck paying to the exchequer over the years. Have a look for yourselves.

Then there's this outfit dubiously called a "leisure" company which is never identified in all his blurbs, I wonder why. Is it because it was a "timeshare" operation?

I didn't need to go to her again nor would I as I had no faith in her at all.
My experience of her was that she was a complete waste of space. I'm not sure she came out of the expenses scandal very well either...

She claimed over £90,000 in second home allowance between 2004 and 2009, despite living less than 30 miles from Westminster. Upon publication of MP's expenses in 2009, Ward defended her choice to fund a second home in Westminster from her parliamentary allowance, citing her need to balance her public duties with her duties as a mother of small children. Ward was one of 98 MPs who voted in favour of legislation which would have kept MPs expense details secret.

Has this Labour PCC candidate said anything about claiming expenses yet?
The fact that you say Harrington may be a bit dodgy does not paint CW in any better light.

The Labour and Lib Dem candidates have stated they will not support middle and back office privatisation.
I am unsure what the UKIP candidate stance is on the subject. Maybe they will come on here and let us know?
The Conservative candidate has said he will wait until after November 15th before considering the matter; however, he currently chairs the Hertfordshire Police Authority which was on the verge of giving a contract to G4S - I kid you not - and it could be concluded that if he is elected, he will carry on and give them the contract after the election, even though we all saw just how appalling badly G4S operated with regard to their Olympics security fiasco.
This election is slightly unusual in the it is based on the supplementary vote system, whereby voters can write a 1 against the name of their first preference candidate and a 2 against their second preference candidate.
Right now, it seems the only way to ensure that G4S's grubby and incompetent hands are kept off of our private and personal data is to vote for candidates who are stating publicly that they are opposed to giving G4S a contract.
I refer - at present - to the Labour and Lib Dem candidates.
It is being predicted that turnout could struggle to reach 15% for this election. This actually represents an opportunity for people in West Hertfordshire to exercise a crucial effect on the outcome of the election, provided we all vote intelligently on November 15th.
I urge everyone to vote for the candidates who oppose G4S with their two votes and to urge others to do likewise.

The fact that you say Harrington may be a bit dodgy does not paint CW in any better light.
I understand that she didn't "switch" to avoid CG tax when she traded up to a larger London flat to accommodate her growing family, but paid it in full.
It's very clear that Reg Edit whoever s/he is has a distinctly anti CW agenda peddled increasingly on this site.
The bonus for her is that she has her life back, doesn't have to put up with the likes of Reg anymore and lives happily in her primary domicile here in Watford as she has always done with her children attending local schools.
Something anyone who regularly sees her shopping in Watford Market will vouch for,
May I suggest that Reg "get a life"?
I would also be interesting to establish just now much the Mayor and her husband have fleeced (according to Reg Edit's standards) the people of Watford for in the last 10 year. Most estimates put the cost of the pair well over a £million or two when you take into account all their support staff. expenses, etc

There is a huge gulf between legality and morality when it comes to expenses. Most politicians understood/understan
d that only too well, including CW.
I merely said she did not come out of the expenses scandal very well. Her expense claims, whilst legal, were no doubt questionable for a Watford-based MP.
I'm glad Claire has her life back. I hope things do not change for her - we have had quite enough of Claire being MP for Watford, frankly we deserve better, much better.
There's also a comment on CW flipping homes in the article below. Snow white she was clearly not!
Here is but one of the old articles on CW's dodgy expenses - still available on the WO website.
