Man jailed for sexually abusing young girl in later nineties

A MAN was jailed for five years today after being convicted of sexually abusing a girl in the late 1990s.

The victim, who is now a university student, told a jury that Kieran Wareing assaulted her at an address in Watford and another in Bicester when she was aged between six and nine.

Wareing, 64, of Elstow Road, Kempston, Bedford, appeared at Luton crown court having been convicted of three charges of indecent assault.

One attack happened at his former home in Watford and another in Bicester. The third charge related to a number of occasions when he touched her over her clothing.

Defence barrister Paul Orton said Wareing still "totally denied" he carried out any of the assaults. He said he was supported by his partner and was of previous good character.

Mr Orton said: "Incarceration is going to be very, very difficult for him. These allegations were not reported for 12 or 13 years and came out of the blue."

He handed the judge testimonials and references supporting his client.

Judge Marie Catterson said the offences were "opportunistic and did not involve careful advanced planning," but she said "It was repeated and serious indecency."

She went on: "It was selfish abuse of a pre-pubescent child more than 40 years your junior."

He must register as a sex offender for life and, on his release from prison, must not be alone or live with children aged under 16.

I obviously don’t condone this but how on earth is it proven?

The current media frenzy must surely have had an influence on this. Sadly it will open the door to various types of allegations that may, or may not be true, but with the lack of evidence are likely to just be believed 'to be on the safe side', without any regard to the lives that are ruined when allegations turn out to be false.

That 'ain't necessarily so. With the police in disarray over corruption allegations left, right and centre, and judges living in a world that's a million miles away from ordinary folk, who's to say that anyone's doing their job properly?
