Thieves reportedly used hammers to smash the glass of Goldsmiths in The Harlequin today, in an attempt to rob the jewellery store.
Officers confirmed they received a call about the incident shortly before midday.
Dan Phillips, police representative, said: "Officers are currently at the scene and a cordon has been set up while detectives make initial inquiries."
Police would not confirm as to whether anything was stolen from the store.
A shop worker from a nearby jewellery store, who wanted to remain anonymous, said she heard the glass being smashed.
She said: "I’ve heard from customers that they were smashing the windows with hammers, but that they didn’t get away with anything."
Police are appealing for anyone who saw the incident take place or people making off from the scene to contact them as soon as possible on non-emergency number 101.
