Crowds of people braved heavy rains on Saturday, for a special tree planting in The Moatfield, Bushey.

Friends of the Moatfield, with support from the Parks Department and the Countryside Management Service, planted three trees to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II.

The trees, a mulberry, crab apple and hornbeam, were selected as they are long living and native to Britain. The Mayor of Hertsmere, Councillor Pat Strack, unveiled a plaque by the hornbeam and made a toast with sloe gin.

She, along with Hertsmere Borough Councillors Carey Keates and Pervez Choudhry, then joined the Friends of the Moatfield for tea and homemade cake in the Bushey Rangers Club House.

The event has been recorded with the Woodland Trust to create a new Royal Register and will count towards the target of six million trees to be planted in 2012.

Yvonne Riley, chairman of The Friends of the Moatfield, said: "We appreciate the support of local people and the efforts of the authorities in making this a park to be proud of."
