A team of students from Bushey Meads School have been declared runners-up in a challenge set by Subway franchisees and entrepreneurs.

Tied into the national curriculum, students were asked to create the best marketing campaign and business plan around a new Subway sandwich, based on the theme of ‘#freshthinking.’

In total, 100 teams of students from across the region entered the competition.

These teams were eventually whittled down to six finalists; Bushey Meads School, Chelmer Valley High School, Milton Keynes College, Northampton College, North Hertfordshire College and Oaklands College.

All six were invited to an exciting Dragons’ Den style pitch at the University of Cambridge in front of a judging panel to win the ultimate prize.

The Bushey Meads school team, which consisted of Katie Waite, Ellen Conway, and Stephanie Ganeswaran, came up with The Subway Mix, containing beef, turkey breast, lettuce, tomato, cucumber, onions, sweetcorn, mayonnaise and barbecue sauce.

Although they did not win, the pupils did receive £250-worth of vouchers as a runner up prize.

Claire Hazel, business studies teacher at Bushey Meads School, said: "The students really enjoyed taking part in the challenge.

"It gave them a tangible experience of how business works and the skills needed to take a project through to fruition. They did a fantastic job."

The competition was won by Chelmer Valley High School from Chelmsford.
