Hertfordshire has been given almost £5m in extra funding by the government to help restore and maintain roads.

Hertfordshire County Council has been allocated £4.94m from the £333m of additional road renewal funding that Chancellor George Osborne announced in the autumn statement at the beginning of the month.

Local authorities had to be declared eligible by ensuring they are not taking part in any Private Finance Initiatives and that they will publically announce how they have spent the money each year.

The money was divided between local authorities on how many roads they were in charge of, and how many repairs needed to be done.

Transport secretary Patrick McLoughlin said: "This extra money will support economic growth and development by helping local authorities to get the best out of their local road networks.

"This funding can be spent on measures to bring smoother, safer and more reliable journeys to the travelling public whether they are commuting to work or taking the children to school."
