A capsule containing a snapshot of life in 2012 will be buried under the foyer of Rickmansworth School’s new sports hall.

Students were asked to design a "time capsule" to be buried underneath the £2.8 million sports facility, which will be finished in March.

A panel of staff and pupils selected a short list which included Peter Munnelly, Poppy Sheppard, Jessy Yang and Megan Watson.

Megan’s design was chosen for its unique design, which was based on the school crest. A suggested list of contents includes tickets for the London Olympic, and a variety of photographs capturing this amazing year of sport.

Other items include a school tie, a programme from the school production and pictures of pupils from the school. Megan was presented with a prototype of her time capsule by acting headteacher Kevin Flanagan.

Mr Flanagan said: "We could have selected any of the four short listed, but Megan’s design links directly to the history of the school and is a fantastic idea". The production of the time capsule will now be completed by the school’s design and technology department and sealed in the sports hall foyer prior to its opening in March. MP for Watford Richard Harrington visited the school, in Croxley Green on Friday, to meet the winner and runners up of the capsule design competition.

He said: "The students had clearly put a great deal of thought and care into their designs and they should all be very proud of their work.

"It was great to see the new sports hall in progress as I know how important it is to the school and how much the students are looking forward to being able to use.

"I am sure that when the time capsule is discovered in many years to come, they will get a real sense of life of students and the school in 2012, and I am looking forward to seeing the completed building next year."
