St James’s Church in Bushey High Street recruiting new bell-ringers

Campanologists from a Bushey church are on the hunt for new recruits to help ring the church bells.

St James’s Church in Bushey High Street has eight bells, and despite attracting a good mix of ringers, the church group is looking for new members.

The troupe usually rings the bells on a Sunday morning at 9am, prior to the 9.30am service and on the second and fourth Sunday of each month at 5.30pm, before the 6.30pm service.

Practice nights are held on Thursday evenings from 7.30pm to 9pm, except the first Thursday of each month and from time-to-time extra training sessions are held for learners hoping to progress.

Sue Morton, tower captain, said: "We are always keen to recruit new bell-ringers - most people from about the age ten upwards can do this.

"We do not have enough ringers and need to be recruiting new learners on a regular basis. Most people can learn to ring, you don’t need to be musical, just a good sense of rhythm and have the ability to have fun.

"Bell ringing is a great challenge, and wonderful life experience.

"In addition to learning a traditional English skill, you could also learn how to become an effective team player, bell-ringing is considered the ultimate team activity, and also how to interact with other people from all age groups and all walks of life.

"During the year, we arrange an annual outing, where we visit other churches by prior arrangement to ring their bells. "This is always a fun day which usually finishes with a good curry and chat in a local restaurant.

"If you would like to know more, or come and join us, please contact me - I look forward to hearing from you.

"Everyone is welcome to come along and see what we do - always best to contact us first though."
