Daphne Pullen awarded OBE for her work with Watford YMCA, the Samaritans and chair of trustees at CLIC Sargent

A former Bushey resident who has volunteered at various charities for 35 years has been recognised with an OBE in the New Year’s Honours List.

Daphne Pullen, 60, was given the honour for services to charity in recognition of her work with Watford YMCA, the Samaritans and chair of trustees at CLIC Sargent.

The former Bushey Meads School pupil has lived in the area since the age of seven but retired to Wiltshire last year.

She continues to commute back to South West Hertfordshire at least once a week to continue work she began aged 25, while also working full-time as a lawyer in London.

She said: "I am a great advocate of volunteering because it does wonderful things for people, not just the people you are helping but the volunteers.

"I have been all around the world doing it and became something of an expert but it has always been a bit of a joke because I just say I’m Daphne from Watford."

This is what honours are for. No dis-respect to our outstanding sportsmen and women, but they already recieved medals for just doing their job.
