An Abbots Langley schoolgirl has been found dead at her home this morning.

Jessica Cobb, 15, was a pupil at St. Michael’s Catholic High School in High Elms Lane.

St Michael’s headteacher Edward Conway said " Everyone at St. Michael’s is devastated by this tragic loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with the whole family at this very sad time".

All students and staff have been informed of the sad news in assemblies today, and prayers and a Mass have been said.

Police have confirmed they were called to Gable Close, Abbots Langley, at 7.30 this morning. Jessica was pronounced dead at the scene and at this stage the police are not treating it as suspicious.

Students are also being offered professional advice and support where necessary.

Jess, sleep well and Rest in Peace, a beloved member of our form, who will be missed hugely! Our prayers go to you and in particular your family at this grievous time. We have all prayed for you today and we are all in complete shock. 'Eternal rest grant unto her O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon her. May she rest in peace'

Obviously, this is an awful tragedy and I share the sentiments of the above posters with regard to thoughts of the girl's family.

However, I feel bound to make the observation that this is a classic example, which I have warned about before, of the inherent dangers of social networking and allowing readers to make comments in public which may not always be appropriate.

The allegations of bullying are serious and will no doubt form part of an enquiry into this unfortunate girl's death. Indeed, we have not been told the precise nature of how she died but it may be that there will eventually have to be an inquest. If so, that is the appropriate place in which to air such matters and, if this happens, no doubt the WO will report the facts and the result in due course.

I feel obliged to advise posters, for their own good, that it is legally unsafe to make allegations as yet not officially substantiated. In the pre-Internet days I very much doubt an editor would have published such material in the form of "Letters to the Editor", but now it seems that readers' comments containing allegations can be published willy-nilly without legal restrictions or checking - a dangerous trend in my view, as I have said.
