A fire in a South Oxhey house has been extinguished

Fire in South Oxhey loft Fire in South Oxhey loft

A family from South Oxhey had to be evacuated from their home after the roof caught fire.

The blaze started in the loft of a house in Hoylake Gardens, at about 1.10pm today. Four fire engines and police officers were called.

When the fire service arrived the found the roof of the semi-detached house alight, and used two jets and two hose reels to extinguish it.

Six firefighters with breathing apparatus were also used, as it appeared the fire had started on the ground floor and spread to the first floor and loft.

A plume of smoke could be seen issuing into the snow-leaden skies, as the team of firefighters battled to bring the fire under control.

Only when the blaze was out could the full damage be seen; a gaping hole left in the roof, and black smoke marks staining the walls and windows.

The gas and electric board were called to investigate possible damage to the supply, and a fire investigation has also been launched.

The whole house was on fire with a massive hole in the roof with flames going well above the house . I fireman actually was in the loft of the house smashing his way through the roof to get more water in . Very brave man .

I would like to say I am proud of South Oxhey residents because the community is pulling together to support and help this poor family. Fund raising is under way and there is a meeting being held at the William Morris Labour Club this Saturday morning. All are welcome to attend, and this will be put to the test when this Conservative tries to walk over the threshold to support and help. Our community spirit shines through hardship and I hope we can all build upon this.

Hello GWH123,
That is correct and there is great support.

Actually thrive offered all sorts of support but now seem to be back tracking. As a single person it seems you can lose a three bedroom house through no fault of your own and be rehomed in a one bedroom flat!
