JD Wetherspoon voted Nation’s Favourite Pub Brand at the Eat Out awards 2013

Watford based pub operator JD Wetherspoon has been voted the Nation’s Favourite Pub Brand.

It won the accolade at the inaugural Eat Out awards 2013.

The awards, hosted by "Eat Out" magazine, are dedicated to the high street pub and restaurant sector, celebrating the very best business practice.

The award, made in association with Livebookings, was voted for by the public.

The other two nominees among the final three were All Bar One and Slug & Lettuce.

More than 5,000 consumers voted in order to choose their favourite brand, with Livebookings canvassing customers via their database, as well as the award being promoted through social media and the Eat Out website.

Wetherspoon’s director of purchasing and logistics, Paul Hine, was presented with the award at the awards ceremony in London last Thursday (January 24).

He said: "We are delighted to win the award.

"It is wonderful that Wetherspoon and its pubs have been voted as the ‘Nation’s Favourite Pub Brand’ and even more rewarding as it has been voted for by the public.

"We will continue to offer our customers excellent pubs, with great food and drink and first-class service at all times and look forward to continued success."

It’s quite an achievement and should not be underestimated at a time when beer sales have fallen for the eighth year in a row, with 381 million fewer pints being drunk in 2012. Figures reveal that 18 pubs now close across the country each week - up from 12 a week from September 2011 to March 2012 - taking the total number of closures to 5,800 since the introduction of the Beer Duty Escalator in 2008 and the rise of cheap supermarket booze.. The market has forced this chain to move away from the traditional boozer and offer a different menu. Our decision makers as regards our high street redevelopment now face a similar challenge with the growth of on line shopping. Our own binge quarter days might well be numbered.

I just think it is a bit sad to know a pub by 'brand' in the first place. I'm sure my local boozer is owned by Big Business somewhere along the chain, but to me it is just my local and I have no idea what company ultimately owns it.
It is my local on my street and the thought there might be identical ones in Aberdeen, Coventry and Torquay doesn't particurlaly fill me with cheer.

Its great to see the sucess of Wetherspoons. I wonder if the extra money made by the Beer Duty introduced in 2008 is higher than the benefits now to be paid out to all the unemployed bar staff, managers, dray men.....the list is endless, and then add the suppliers to the industry that have gone out of business. The tax man doesnt seem to think these things through very well and the ones that ARE still working have to pay his wages.
