Motorist cut free from car in crash in Stephenson Way, Watford

A motorist had to be cut out of their vehicle following a crash in Stephenson Way, Watford this morning.

The crash shortly before midday brought one of the major routes from the M1 motorway into town to a standstill.

Firefighters were called to assist paramedics with removing the roof of the blue Renault Clio which had collided with a barrier close to the Imperial Way roundabout.

Three people travelling in the car sustained injuries although it is understood only one was trapped inside.

Sad to see yet another crash in Watford and I hope the people involved make a full and speedy recovery.

It should be pointed out that the 20's plenty campaign would not have made any difference to this accident either as Stephenson Way would not be affected.

Most crashes happen on the main roads and this one is no exception.

I'd be interested to see photos of this, because I've complained about the road surface here countless times. There are bumps and holes on the approach to this roundabout and most modern cars with ABS will detect a rough road surface as a differential lack of traction and reduce the braking power accordingly. It's very dangerous!

@ TRT - I know what part of the road you mean - the very 'holey' surface over the bridge that gets filled (when it was raining last time) and then breaks up again as it's the 'joins' of the bridge ...... as you leave Radlett Road to join Stephenson Way??

However, the accident was just off the roundabout as you join the slip road to then join the main Stephenson Way dual carriageway towards Tesco /Harlequin .... it would have been under acceleration rather than at breaking point.

Both there and at the join between the regular tarmac and the yellow shell-grip surface on the out-of-town carriageway.

Thanks for the update on the actual location. Have you noticed the growing pile of rubbish being dumped on the slip-road divider?

Poor sods, they only went down Stephenson Way to avoid the notoriously menacing Woodmere Avenue width restriction.

Been about 3 months since this naughty restriction claimed the life of a car, and the need for half of HCC fire appliances to attend, it even behaved in the icy conditions, or is it a case of all the idiot drivers have realised they can't point a vehicle in a straight line and drive cautiously for a few feet and kept away! .......

Seriously though hope the occupants of the car are ok, there seems to be a worryingly high number of RTA's recently in/around Watford?

i think it was approaching or leaving the roundabout and heading towards watford from the A41, looked pretty bad, too much speed approaching a roundabout maybe?

Distressing number of RTA's reported in the paper today, take care out there

It's a 30mph speed limit, so how did the driver manage to crash, collided with a barrier ?

No, the limit at that stretch is 70. National speed limit on a dual carriageway. There's a derestriction repeater sign not 50 yards before that slip road starts. IMHO that's too high for that stretch as there's a merge from the right with restricted visibility where the roundabout joins that road, followed by a drop to 40 another 300 yards down the road. Odd that the limit in one direction is 70, yet in the other it's 40. They should be 50 in both directions along the entirety of that stretch between Waterfields Roundabout and Imperial Way roundabout.
