Building work has begun on a new £42 million mental health centre near Radlett.

On Thursday Tom Cahill, the chief executive of the Hertfordshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, broke the turf at Kingsley Green near Radlett, with the help of the trust’s chair Hattie Llewellyn-Davies, and Andrew Osborne, chairman of the main contractor.

When finished the centre will be a therapeutic environment for adults experiencing a mental health crisis and will have en-suite single bedrooms for everyone who stays there.

The centre will also have courtyard gardens, a shop and café, as well as treatment and therapy areas.

The building has been designed with the input of service users and carers.

The first phase of the building is expected to be complete by summer 2014.

With my experience of being a mental health service user I predict there will be a hold up during the building process, a possible scaling down of the original usage of the new building before the land is sold off for housing within ten years. Yes, I'm having a depressive episode. Yes, I'm suicidal. No, I don't have access to qualified people who are able to help. No, don't use me as a guinea-pig for various pills. Yes, I give up.
